Need some help. I am looking for some type of air or hydraulic press that is portable yet has enough force to push bushings in etc for backhoes and bulldozers (about 10-15 tons). What are your suggestions.

thanks
Tom

If your putting bushings in a thru hole, your best bet is a Enerpac or equivilent "Hollo-ram" that just as it's name suggests has a open hole thru the center. You insert a good piece of Grade 8 rod all the way thru the bushing and whatever hole your putting it in. Then put a plate on the the backside of the hole to pull against and nut that end. Slip another pull plate at least as large as the bushing OD up against the bushing, then slide on the ram and nut that end. Pull everything up as tight as possible with the nuts and then run the ram out effectively pushing the bushing up in the hole. If the bushing is longeer than the stroke on the ram all you have to do is take up the slack with the nuts each time you run out of stroke. It sounds like a handful I know. Ican tell you though, as a heavy equipment mechanic that also does field line boring work, it's not as bad as it sounds, even for one person. I've lost count of how many bushings I've installed with the Enerpac 30ton hollo-ram ram on my truck. Although mine only has a 2 inch stroke, the ram is healthy enough to push in almost anything at 30T, but with the short stroke it's small and lite enough to be able to handle without any problem. Using a smaller ram would make it even easier. Keep an eye on E-bay, you can often get these rams in the smaller sizes for 1/3 to 1/2 normal price.
Kind of a long explanation I know, but I hope it helps. Good luck, Wayne

Thanks to all who responded.

Wayne;

I think you hit the "nail" on the head. I'm attempting to replace bushings and pins on a CASE 580E Backhoe. I really like the setup you described. Just one more question;

Could you point me in the right direction of who/where would handle the Enerpac you described? I would like to see what a new one would cost.

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

Enerpac makes one of the best portable hydraulic units that I have seen. They are reliable, and many accessories (duckbill spreaders, pullback cylinders, etc.) are readily available. The downside is that they are cashy--but, you get what you pay for!

Good luck!

Ron
