Basically what everyone is telling you is "You get what you pay for". You have a lot of good information here, and a lucky boyfriend, and he is lucky to have you, a lady who cares enough to do all this research and not just get the first set that comes along. A set up to half inch will do most things, buy larger as needed. Or for his next birthday. The small sizes, down to #6, are also usefull.

You always see tools like this listed as "Titanium". Usually it's just a marketing ploy to make you think your getting a tool made of what most people recognize as a tough alloy, and use it to hide what is often an inferior grade steel used in the actual tool itself. The tools aren't actually titanium, they only have a TiN or Titanium Nitride coating. This does in fact aid somewhat in the tapping process, but when your hand tapping holes, I can honestly say I have never noticed a difference between coated and uncoated, even in the high dollar brands. The best thing to do is to simply keep the hole lubricated with a good brand dark cutting oil, or tap magic, or something like that. As a heavy equipment mechanic who does field work, I have to rely on my tools to always be there and ready for the job at hand because I'm often working in the middle of nowhere. If I had to make a decision from sets on the Arizona tool site I'd choose one of the Hanson sets because I know from experience they have real quality tools. In fact I have a the two small sets that go to 1/2 and 13mm on my truck now. I also carry a big Craftsman set that goes to 3/4. Dad also has the same sets on his truck, and has carried them for close to 15 years without any major problems. Beyond these sets, everything else was purchased as individual pieces as the need arose. It's not often you have to tap a hole over 3/4, especially on a piece of farm equipment. I can only remember doing something that big a few times, and it was usually just chasing factory threads. Usually when you get over a 3/4 you getting into the realm of using a mag base drill just to get a hole drilled, and then you still have alot more worries to get the tap started straight, etc etc. So, basically I'd have to say that for all that's in the set it sounds like one heck of a deal, but I'd be suspect of the quality of the tool. If your gonna use them often, I'd spend the little bit extra for a name brand set up to 1/2 or 3/4 depending on need, and add from there if the need arises. My .02..... Hope it helps..... Wayne

Kindly let me know what type of tap set should I try to do M5 tapping on aged maraging steel. This is proving very diffuclt & time consuming for us with ordinary Nitride coated taps.

Ann I have two sets one s.a.e. and one metric they are good for chasing threads or cleaning up bent threads they do adjust but not much, they are not any good for cutting threads. the best for cutting threads are Starrett, Greenlee, Brubaker and morse, kelsy hays..... ..Jer

Ann that's way to cheap for such a big tap and die set, I would be suspitious. Is it solid titanium or titanium coated? if they're just coated which is my guess, I would avoid it or you could purchase it and replace with good carbide taps and dies as they wear out. Just my opinion.
