Welding help needed

I have a Lincoln 225 amp AC welder and am using 1/8 6013 rod to but weld 1/2 inch think 2 inch wide bar stock. I have the welder set at 135 amps. I left about 1/16 inch gap between the pieces and welded pretty slowly one side. It looks great but when I shine a light into the gap I don't think I penetrated the stock but about 1/8 inch. I wanted to go half way through. How do I get better penetration? Do I need to go up in amps? Weld even slower? V notch the stock -- which I don't think I should have to do for 1/2 stock. Please help. Thanks!

I just welded some 1/2"X4" flat on front axle. Used a Lincoln 225 with 6011, 135 amps, fairly long arc, arc directed 60% to the 1/2" steel, 40% to the 3/16" under metal. Made 3 passes. Just personal bias here but I bought 50# each of 6011, 6013,and 7014 2 years ago. Still have over 1/2 a box of 6013 and 7014, already used up 250# of 6011.

T Bone's advise is, as uaual, the best. I would add that I would use a little more heat. I have the same welder, 35 yrs. old though, and I would probably start at 150 I use 6013 mostly too. It might take more than one pass to get built up too. I bevel to almost a point, 1/16" at most left, maybe leave a small space, no more than 1/16". With this 150 amps may be too much for the first pass, might melt through.

I would add that the backside be back-gouged to sound metal to lower the risk of slag inclusions and lack of fusion, for a full penetration joint. Also, I never find it necessary, with my machines, to set above 125 amps for 1/8" dia. electrodes.

the heat for 1/8 rod is 125 amps not 135 or 150 6013 is not the rod to use 6011 will be your root pass. then clean the welded and make the next pass with 7018. this will work for you.or you can use 7024 and you can get a good weld and look great with very little clean up the slag it peel off.

Hi Chris,

AWS code calls for anything from 1/4" and larger to have a grove opening of not less than 45 degrees. Thats 22.5* on each side of the center of weldment. They also call for a root land of 1/8" maxmium thickness. The land is the base material from the back of the plate forward to where the bevel starts. Root opening can be 0 to 1/8" maxmium. 1/2 of rod diameter for root opening works well.

The 6013 will work just fine but not a good choice for an open root weldment. What I would do that works well is bevel the plate equal from both sides leaving a 1/8" center land then weld with 6013 from both sides. This method will give you 100% penetration, help control plate warpage and be with-in AWS spec's for certified weld.

Hi Chris, try 6011 for first penetrating weld. Left 1/16 to 1/8 gap. For stronger weld, use of 7018 AC after 6011. Bernard le mécano
