I want to get my boyfriend a tap and die set for his birthday. What is a good brand and reasonable price?

Everyone is going to cringe at this but your decision should also be based also on how often and the type of work he will use the tap and die set on. Avoid carbon type taps & dies as they will not do much other then clean a dirty thread. This is the statement most folks cringe. A tool outlet area featured a "China" built set that went up to 1.00" UNF an UNC. I purchased this set about two years ago and it has worked great. As I recall the set cost around $30/40 came with hard plastic case, tap and die wrenches were included. Truth is USA manufacturing companies are in trouble. Watch what so-called name brand set you buy. Many USA companies have put their name on China, India or Taiwan products. I use my set often as my background trade is toolmaker. I have a (home) full machine shop with metal cutting machines. Yes I am patriotic and would prefer to buy American products but sometimes it comes down to pure finance. And as you stated you were buying it for your boy friend. Oh buy the way you can purchase a set of this type from any tool outlet store just make sure it is a HSS set.

The price will be determined by the sizes included as well as the quality. The best names in such is Greenlee or Morse. Ace, Vermont American, Hanson and Craftsman also good. I would think that on old tractors you would only need UNC and UNF threads. You will have choices of size coverages. Perhps buy him a set from 1/4 to 1/2 for about $50-60. Up to !" will cost condiderably more. He will appreciate. You must be a pretty good girl not to resent his affection for tractors.

What you DONT want, is a carbon steel tap and
die set.

You want good olde US made, HSS steel.
Although there is a well made Japanese set as well.

Expect to pay 100-150 for a reasonable
set.

Any set around 50$ is likely carbon steel.

About 25 years ago i bought a bigger Craftsman set for about a hundres bucks. It was pretty good quality, and i was happy with it. A few years ago it was stolen, and i was faceing the problem of replaceing it.

I went to Sears and they still sell the same set, but now it's a bit over two hundred!!! I bought it, and so far it apears to be of the same quality the old one was. I hated the price, but at least it's NOT junk like a lot of stuff Sears sells!

I agree, buy a good set or you are throwing your money away!! Robert

Craftsman has a few nice sets, that are of good quality. the problem with tap and die sets and other tools for that matter, is you get what you pay for, any cheap set will be absolute junk,
plan on spending over a hundred dollars for a good small set, and upwards of five hundred to six hundred dollars for a large set.
