I am looking to purchase a welding torch for brazing and light welding/rough cutting. The price for hoses, regulator, tips etc varies from $150 to $200. Tanks seem to cost $100. Brands I have come across are Lincoln, Turbo-Tourch, and others I can't recall. What differentiates a $200 torch from a $150 one? The packages seem to include the same items. Does $50 more at purchase save money over time?

Jim

Smith is my choice. They do not use an injector to mix the gases. Smith has been around a long time and tips or repairs are available most anywhere.

Bought my first torch set in'68, an NCR? brand- parts not available since the late '80s. Guages and heating tip are still good, needed new cutting torch. Bought a "Smith wrench" then, like Victor, good brand, parts easy to come by. Availability and popularity might vary, depending on your area. These days, you can't depend on any company to exist years from now.

Jim; I would buy nothing but "Victor", may cost a little more, but parts, tips, ect---are aviable anywhere, tanks cost more than $100, anwyay they do here, better double that figure! With a "Victor" set up you can't go wrong!

Also may add a Victor cutting tip can be purchased for about any place that sells any welding supplies for about $10. Many others have to be ordered and cost $20 +

Hi Jim,

Theres nothing finner than a Victor 100 torch. Small body for great hand control and less hand fatique. A with a 3/16"x25ft hose works well for shop use. The torch is rated for 1-1/2" cutting or brazing 1/2" plate. Great quality and will last a very long time.

Nothing wrong with other brands other than the large mxing body size is like using a club.

T_Bone,

Just read your note. Thank you. My primary work is HVAC related so smaller/lighter is good. Frequently the space around a fitting is very restricted. Again, thank you.

Jim
