Brake Controllers

I am looking at three different styles of trailer electric brake controllers:

1. Brake pedal positioning type - Jordan "Ultima"
2. Tow vehicle inertia type - Tekonsha "Prodigy"
3. Timed ramp-up type - Draw-Tite "Activator III"

My trailer is a 10K GTW twin axle, 4 brake, utility. Because of truck limitations, I will not be exceeding 5K GTW.

Never having used a trailer, I have no practical experience with such braking systems. The proportional action of #1 seems appealing to me but I am having some difficulty deciding which I should get. All three are similarly priced so relative cost is not a consideration.

I would appreciate any advice or comments. Something else I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance.

After some research, I decided to get the Tekonsha Prodigy also. There's an article in Trailer Life magazine about June of '02 that compares controllers
based on the method of applying brakes. Timed controllers do not apply brakes until the time you have set has expired. With response delayed even 1/2 second, you may expire first. I haven't used the trailer yet, but I'm confident Prodigy will do the job.

we use a Tekonsha on ours

great little unit, easy set-up and when you get used to it, you can dial in the amount of braking for the weight you're pulling and you never even feel it apply, it's so smooth

I have been trailering equipment on trailers behind pickups for 15+ years. Started with a Tekonsha brake controller then. Updated controller technology with each pickup trade. Have a Voyager on my 1999. Have not had first problem with controllers yet and will go with a Tekonsha on next trade-up. Currently pulling a 9K gooseneck tandem.

I have the Tekonsha "Prodigy" that I use when I pull my race car and I love it, very simple and self leveling.I have no other experience with any other brake controllers but I have heard all good about that one is the reason I went with it.
