Hello, I would like to hear any comments pro or con, about which self-propeled mower is the best between the Cub Cadet from Lowes with the Kawasaki 6.5 h.p. 21" cut for $478.00 ?? "VERSES" the John Deere 22" 6.5 h.p. with the Briggs & Straton for $540.00 ?? Both I believe are overhead valve engines. Thank you all for your comments. chainsaw

Was trying to decide the same thing four years ago--wanted to buy the "last" mower for me and was looking between several models of JD and Cub Cadet.

Bought the Cub (3000-series with a Kohler engine) because it seemed to be a better buy. Had nothing but troubles starting from week one (leaky gas tank) for about 2 years, with absolutely no help from Cub Cadet...just one snotty form letter. The machine was a true lemon and the company stonewalled. Over the course of a year or two after that, I rebuilt and rewired most of it and finally it is a reliable mower, but it was painful.

On the other hand, I have an old MTD mower with a 17.5 horse Tecumseh. I've used it and abused it much over several years and it still runs much better than the Cub.

I paid roughly $600 for the MTD and $7,000 for the Cub...and the MTD has been the far, far better mower.

good luck with whatever you buy,
Tom

Hello to all, I deceided to go with the J.D. MODEL JS63C and bought same today. It has a 13 ga. steel deck "green of cource" and the engine is 6.75 H.P.instead of 6.50. 3 forward speeds and the front wheels turn 360 degrees. Rear bager is extra charge if you should need one. Starts on the first pull and comes with a 2 year warranty. The J.D. dealer will perform all warranty work. Once again, Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond. chainsaw

I know someone that has a kawasaki and he says they seem to be kind of hard starting, kind of cold blooded was what he said. Even the dealer told him thats the way they are.

Dont know much about either mower,But I would lean toward the Kawasaki engine. Also, I would lean toward the brand that had a dealer close to me. Both have good parts and sevice support. Good Luck.....Rick

Actually if you get the May issue of Popular Mechanics , they tested several mowers of that size.

I haven't seen the new JD's but I bet if you went to the MTD. com you would see that the Cub Cadet is built by them and is exactly the same as a White . I am not saying that is a bad thing but don't be sucked in to paying more than you have to because of a name paint and decals.

I bought a Cub-Cadet lawn tractor(made by MTD) back in 1994. I was all set in my mind to buy a John Deere. That was until my wife says , "Lets Go Look At Cub-Cadet". What a difference. The Cub-Cadet was so much better built than the John Deere. Also less money than the John Deere. It was a night and day difference. We still have the Cub-Cadet. Never any problems. I would by another one any time. On the other hand , we decided to also buy a rototiller that fall. New rototillers are hard to find in the fall. I was so happy with the cub-cadet lawn tractor , that once I located a Cub-cadet rototiller , I bought it sight unseen. Then went and picked it up. The rototiller ended up being nothing but a cheap tinny MTD rototiller , painted yellow. I also still have the rototiller. Never had a problem with it. But still , it is nothing but a cheap tinny MTD , painted yellow. My point is: You had better go look at what you are buying.
