My summer project(one of them) will be a log splitter. I am trying to decide wether I should use a hyd pump on the PTO or use a separate gas motor(5 horse or better) I dont think that the hydraulics on the tractor would be enough on their own. hence the separate pump on the PTO. the tractor is a MM 335 utility. any suggestions or opinions? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Phil

Phil, I've made five tow behind splitters, using Rambler spindles, then finally started to reallize that by the time I bought the materials, got an engine for it, and purchased other components, I could have bought a new one from Northern already assembled for about the same price. The one I'm using now is a 3 point setup from Northern that I paid around $450 for. It is an excellent unit that I run off the tractor hydraulics.

I'm on the other side from Ron. I have a hard enough time keeping the tractor going, last thing I need is another engine to keep running. I'd run mine off the tractor.

The only thing is that a little 5hp motor would use alot less fuel. A little diesel engine would even be better.
Maybe if you were really clever you could build it so the engine could also power a generator, double duty from one engine.

Phil,

If you use a separate motor, it'll free up your tractor for other things. The reason I say this is that a few years ago, I bought a chipper/shredder that works off the three point hitch/PTO of my 2N Ford. It works fine, but I wish now that I'd gotten one with an independent engine.

Good Luck!

Ron
