Hopeing someone can help me, I have a 1986 F-150 2wd, I'm in need of new tires , I'm thinking that my P225R15's are alittle small for the truck and would like to buy 235 or 245R 15, my question is, the bigger the tire the better/worst the gas mileage? and why?
I'm not talking monster mudders, just plain radial truck tires.

Thanks
Dave

I have heard both ways on the mileage, when I did this once, I couldn't tell a difference. Remember that your speedometer will be off, so it will be very hard to tell about mileage changes.

You really should have the 235/R75 Tire. The 245/75 might touch the frame when you turn.
In theory, you will get .017 MPG more with the larger tire.

Hi Dave,

I did that once to a Dodge PW looking to gain at least some mileage, calculations said about 1mpg more. What I got was the same mileage but lost about 20% torque or just like I lost a couple cylinders. Very noticeable!

The time before that I went with a size smaller and picked up alittle torque and didn't loose any mileage.

Granted I'm only working with 10mpg at the best empty and 7mpg towing maxmium weight so for a mileage effect it wasn't worth it.
