Lincoln welder output

I have an older Lincoln Weldanpower 225 with 4000 watt auxillary output. It's rated at 50 cycle rather than 60. Will this create any problems using appliances, tools, etc. that are rated at 60 cycle. Thanks in advance

I may be WAY off base here, but could it be that the 50 cycle you are talking about is really the "duty cycle"? If NOT, you can check the actual output cycles of your gen set with an electric clock that has a "second" hand. Just plug it in and check the second hand for the cycles. Hope this helps, Robert

i was fixing a welder just like yours and noticed the 50hz ac plate. i called lincoln tech support toll free and they told me it was ok to use with ac power tools lights etc. if you look at the specs a lot of electric tools and lights are rated 50 and 60 hz. be ware of a lot of the dc welders sa-200 sa250 etc. these machines put out 110 volt dc and will zap any kind of solid state speed control switch or device including flourescent lights. i found out the hard way. lincoln weldings tech line has helped me a number of times they will send wiring diagrams owner and operator manuals free.

The only effect will be on AC motors and fluorescent lighting with magnetic ballasts. Over a long period of use they will run hotter. Clocks run slower. (They lose about 10 sec. every minute) If you can get hold of a clamp on ammeter or digital voltmeter with a frequency scale you can actually tweak the governor so that the welder puts out 60 cycle without getting the output voltage too high. This is only important if you plan to use the unit for a standby power unit. Your power tools are only used for short periods of time and for that they don't care much whether the frequency is right on 60.

You'd have to increast the engine RPM by 20% to go from 50 to 60 cycles. You might be pushing the upper limits of the engines RPM ability, depending on what it is. Any power tools with brushes will not care about the frequency of the power. Most can actually run on DC. I suspect that you are looking at the duty cycle rating rather than the frequency.

AC induction motors will be effected. They will run slightly slower and hotter. Universal motors will not be affected, since they do not rely on the AC frequency to control motor speed. For a universal motor, the speed of the motor is a product solely of voltage. So your angle grinder, drill, saber saw, circular saw, etc will run off of this outlet with not problem.

This all assumes that the outlet on your welder is a 110-120 volt outlet. Make sure it is not 220.

BTW, universal motors will run on DC or AC, so many welders have a straight DC output. This was fine for running an angle grinder.

I just realized that if this outlet is DC, you definitely don't want to use it for anything but universal motors. IE, don't run your fridge or power washer off of it.

correct, that is 120volt DC will run a grinder or other ac/dc brush type motor
