Hello, i have a Farmall 300 1953 model. It seems to run and idle fine. No smoke. If i take off in 1st no problem. 2nd is ok if i am not going up hill. 3rd-5th, forget it. The engine slowly come to a complete stop. Reverse the same as 1st. Any suggestions????? Thanks, Mike.

Mike, We have a 1941 farmall A that is used a couple times a year for plowing. Ours did similar untill we put a new manifold on it. The old one was rusted out, but when I took it off the intake tube was almost plugged up with gas gum deposits and 2 of the exhaust ports were almost filled up with carbon and rust. With the new manifold it ran like a new engine and I even had to put a muffler on it. So it is worth taking it off and looking.

THANKS! I will take it off and look at it. Call me dumb but, The intake sits directly on top of the carb. right? The fuel pulls up..? Where did you get your intake? Thanks, Mike.

Is this just running empty, no load? I'd start with an air cleaner check- oftentimes overlooked, but if the engine doesn't get a good supply of air, it cannot handle the load of even pulling itself.

Mike - Sounds like one of two things: 1 - Insufficient fuel flow to the carb, or 2 - The governor to carburetor linkage is improperly set. (i.e. the governor is only opening the throttle part way).

To check for #1, remove the pipe plug from the bottom of the carb bowl. You should get a solid stream of gas draining out of the carb. If gas just dribbles or drips out of the opening, check for a clogged sediment bowl, or a clogged carb inlet screen (behind the nut where the fuel line attaches).

To check #2 you need a small mirror (like a dentist's mirror) and a flashlight. Remove the air inlet hose off the carb then stick the mirror in so you can see up into the venturi. With the motor stopped set the governor handle to full speed. The throttle plate should be wide open (blade will be vertical). If the throttle plate is not opening all the way, post back and we'll walk you thru the adjustment proceedure.
