I've gone through 2 original Leathermans, 1-rebuilt and 1 lost, I'll probably find it, 1 Wave, just broke it 2 days ago and am sending it in for repair, and bought a Super Tool yesterday to replace the Wave. The Super Tool has the rounded edges and unlocking buttons which I like. I'm lost without a Leatherman.

I have the Gerber Legend. Works well for its intended purpose, quick fixes without going to the toolbox. Only feature that might be interesting to have is the sockets of the leatherman.

I have a Gerber with sockets, love it. Between it any my swiss army knife they make a nice quickie tool kit.

I've been carrying a Gerber for about 8 years now, and I'm lost without one. It's saved my skin a couple of times when I've had a car break down on the highway. I like it's quick draw design a lot better than a Leatherman.

I have one of the original Leatherman Tools - don't know how I got along with out it! I've had this one for 5 or 6 years. The only draw back to it is that the blades on this model don't lock - you can get a real nice pinch with the screw driver blade. The company I worked for bought Gerber multi-tools for all the mechanics. Most of the guys were impressed with the "quick draw" feature Gerber has but unless you find yourself in a "pliers fight" it just ain't real necessary....The Gerber is a lot easier on the palm of your hand, though. I've had one of their belt knives for over 30 years. Gerber makes some good stuff!
As for the multi-tools not being "real" tools, they're not supposed to be. If you're overhauling an engine go get the tool box - multi-tools are a convience item or a way to get out of a bind - not intended to replace a tool box. It saves a wore out old cripple like me a lot of steps....pretty handy for all you can eat crab legs, too! JMO -

Love my Leatherman Wave. It's a tad heavy, but I really like being able to open either cutting blade w/o opening the pliers! Had Leatherman for years. Shot one out of a snowblower (a 7'blower) in November & found it in May still in perfect condition!

You won't get a better deal than @ Cabela's. If your concerned about the weight of the WAVE get the regular Leatherman - Still a super tool.

Gerber is also good - I've got one - keep it in my dresser drawer incase.....

I prefer Gerber to Leatherman, just like the feel and function better. Usually order from Gemplers. Grandest thing since sliced bread, use mine for everything from picking up hot metal to cutting barbed wire, twisting fence ties, even lining up hitch pins.

Probably use it at least a dozen times a day. From opening packages, unhooking fish, etc.Mosty use the needle nose.Have boke a few, misusing them,or putting WAY too much strain on them, but Leatherman has repaired/replaced them. Not always the best tool for the job at hand, but always at hand!Saves me miles of walking, for the "right" tool. lov it! as dave says it's a compromise and we all know how those work BUT--we all carry a knife anyhow and the scar on my finger is the reason I used to carry a lockblade on my belt. have cut 121/2 ga. hi ten once (slight notch) file works good on polarized plugs to unpolarize them and the needle nose pliers have save me miles of walking to the tool box 200' at a time. and I wear a tool belt doing fence.

I've had a couple. Lost one, gave the other one away. Like most "multi-tools" they don't do ANYTHING well, and I'm not a big fan of carrying stuff aruond on my belt.

I prefer to go and get whatever tool I need to do the job right. In my day job, I've been doing it long enough to know what tools I'll need, and carry a handy bag around with pretty much everything I need in the course of a normal day anyway. Around the farm, a Leatherman or it's clone isn't big enough to do 99% of what I need to do anyway.

But then, I suspect I'm in the minority there. I see an awful lot of folks running around with one on their belt.

I have had mine on my belt every day for about 12 years. I had to send it in two or three years back for a rebuild (free). There are five or six sizes or shapes now, but I still like the old or first one best.
