Recommendations for cordless hammer drills?

Second drill question today: I need a hammer drill to drill repeated 1/4 inch holes about 1.5 inch deep in masonry, concrete block, and poured concrete.Possibly I may get involved drilling into marble slabs at one point. Currently I use the regular drills and a masonry bit but I bet a hammer drill would go much faster.

Any recommendations?(I have noticed a LOT of Dewalts on Ebay lately in 18 and 24V.)

I have a DeWalt 14.4V hammer drill. It has a pistol grip and a 1/2" chuck. Works great for small things(Not having to drag out a cord). Big things get drilled with a corded tool.

The choice is yours. But I hope That we Americans would take note that Dewalt is owned by black and decker which is owned by a French Company. I personaly have a few dewalt tools but I will not buy any more no matter how good they might be. There are still a lot of choices out there.

Does your boycott extend to all countries products / ownership that opposed the war in Iraq ? If you boycott all of the countries that are against the war in Iraq, you won't buy much. There is a LOT of foreigh control/ownership in the good old USA. Just send me your money you would be spending if not boycotting :)

There's a new drill on the market that runs rings around hammer drills, costs about $150, but I can't remember the name of it. There was a comparison of several brands written up in "Fine Homebuilding" magazine a few months ago. Anyone know what it is?

I would say don't. Decent cordless hammer drills are heavy beasties that are hard to drag around for much else. Anyway, if you do need a cordless, the 24V DeWalt SDS is as good as it gets for the price. Hilti makes a 36V that wins hands-down, but you pay through the nose.

I have tried a number of them and have found the Dewalt to be the best. I have an 18V now but am sure a 24V would be even better.

18 or 24 volt any brand you can get serviced in your area. The higher the BPS (Beats Per Second) the faster the cut, assuming you have sharp carbide bits. You can re-sharpen them on a "green" silicon carbide wheel not aluminum oxide.
