I have been looking for a side delivery rake for quite a while and final found a David Bradley. It is in very good condition except it has a broken drive gear in the gear box. It is split length-wise. Is it possible to have these welded and last for any length of time. I will only be raking 5 to 10 acres per year.

Thanks,
Bob

If the gear is small enough I would braze it. Apply flux, wire the part together, heat till red apply brazing rod w/flux[bronze rod melts at lower temp]. After the brazing put the gear in dry sand and let it cool slowly, the joint will be stonger than the original part. Good luck

Hi Bob,

If the gear is in an area where it's easy to get to then I would have it welded. If it was difficult to tear apart then I would look at a replacement gear as sucess of welding repair might not work as depending on who does the repair and the cost. If your going to weld it yourself then whats your time worth? I personally would weld it providing I didn't see anything else wrong.

I'm with the other posters, why did it break to begin with? No/wrong type of shear pin? Underdesigned? Bad casting?

Bob , Successful repair is possible using acetylene torch and bare cast iron rod with flux , repair will

last as well as new gear . As ray said , find out

what caused the failure .

I would doubt welding would hold the gear together very long. The higher carbon content in the gear gives it poor weldability. Is it a standard gear that you could get somewhere else?

The experts can reply on the weld reliability issue. I would first be concerned as to what caused the gear to break. If something mechanical caused the broken gear it may happen again-soon after the repair.
