Go a bit large on the wire . You might want a light and an outlet in that well house!

1HP is about 750 watts. Simple unit conversion.
Watts = Volts * Amps
At 240 volts and about 80% efficiency figure 4 to 5 amps running current.

Starting the motor under load is a different story. Motors can draw 3 to 5 times their running current (or more) on startup, until they reach their normal running speed. This can be an issue if you are thinking of driving the motor with a generator of limited capacity.

Thanks Dave, I'm looking into having a well dug and it looks like it's gonna have to be a ways from the house. Just priceing wire for voltage drop.

On that single phase motor the .6 or so power factor will increase line current to about 8.0 amps. #12 will be ok for a about 175 ft with 3% vd. Check voltage at the panel, sometimes only 110.0v line to neutral will be available. Not much room for error unlike a service with 125.0V line to neutral.
