Need to get a couple of dozen ball bearings of about 1/2" for use in decorative stuff - not machinery. Where to find such things? On the Internet?

We have a place in town that repairs truck transmissions and the like , Their dumpster is full of old bearings and they let me climb in there and have all I want. then I just cut them in to and get the steel balls I need .

Spray cans sometimes have about 1/2 inch "marbles" in them... If you aren't in a hurry cut open your old spray cans and see what you find. Some use metal, but most lately I've seen have plastic ones. Shoot them with some silver and instant ball bearing lookalikes.

If you spray a lot of metallic paint toss a few in your spray gun to keep the metallic in suspension as you spray.

Just a thought.

Cut the rubber skin off and you got a nice little half inch steel ball. If you know someone in the computer business that could save them for you or catch a bunch of Brass Monkeys.

Ha - I'm one up on you! I've had a Brass Monkey trap set out back for three days! So far no takers. I'm using regular monkey bait. Maybe I'll try peanut butter. On the other hand, do brass monkeys have brass or steel balls?

Still, a great suggestion. Besides all that monkey "leaving' are ruining our lawn!

Thanks!

I have a few 100 around from what I cut out of the combine & other machinery. If you are pals with any kind of machinery mechanic you might want to ask...

D.O. Bob,

Check where slingshots are sold. They usually have ball bearings sold as ammo in the same area. I know they have 1/4", 3/8" and I THINK 1/2" also. Check Wal-Mart.

Good Luck!

Ron

Fast way to remove balls from old bearings;PLEASE!wear EYE pritection;
Take A stick, shaft ,or anything in the center hole ,andhold it firmley on the anvil,Hit A good lick with A heavy hammer. the ooter race will break like glass.
In case you would like to drill &tapA hole in A ball.It is easy to anneal one as follows;In A peice of heavy plate,drill Ahole Diameter of the ball,but don't go all the way tru,but leave enough in the bottom to make A good seat for the ball. Heat the Ball & surronding plate aera red hot,& allow to cool slowly The plate keeps the ball from coling too fast and getting hard again ,also makes A good jig for drillin.
Anyways Twerked for m.g
