Suggestions for Canoe Trailer?

Bought my two sons a canoe, and now I am looking to make them a little trailer so that they can get the thing around. I want to make it real simple, something like a length of 2" thin wall tubing and just a couple of bunks to sit the canoe on, and hold it down with a couple of ratchet straps. Question is, what would be a good and cheap way to put some wheels on it? Went to a trailer supply store today, and it would cost me over $250 for axle, leaf springs, u-bolts, hubs, wheels, and tires. The torsion type spindle axles are more. Any suggestions?

Thanks, MO

The reason that I was looking into a trailer is because I want to be able to tow it behind a Jeep and an old Ford Bronco - without tops. I'm not worried about the boys, believe me, they would drag the thing 10 miles across hot gravel, barefoot, uphill both ways, if they thought they could go fishing! Just wanted something they could throw the canoe and all their fishing stuff on and be on down the road. Thanks for all the great suggestions,

MO

Mount a 2 inch reciever on the front and rear and make some racks that fit into them that extend above the windshield level. Have seen this done many times on Jeeps and such. Also good for transporting ladders and other long, light stuff.

Good idea, also handy because you could get one of those winches that hooks into the reciever, now you could have a winch front and rear.

Put canoe racks on the trucks, heck its about the same as on a pickup.
Trust me, I've done it both ways and the truck is way easier...

Many of the guys are right; if the kids are pullin' it...build a rickshaw (they should be able to carry it). Otherwise, it goes on top of the vehicle your are driving...leaving your ball hitch for campers, motorboats,ATV transport etc. This is standard practice here in lake country (MN).

Every time I look at your post I still think you mean to get a trailer the boys can drag around by hand. It makes me wonder if you know that the right way to carry a canoe any distance is on your head...Well shoulders really, but head sounds funnier.

Anyway if you had to make a little trailer for dragging a canoe, or maybe to pull behind the fourwheeler or something I'd think of using bicycle tires since they'll go over rough ground more smoothly. For axles just use the bike axle bolted to something. Actually a whole front fork would work really well welded to a T.

Anyway, not sure what you ment you wanted and thought I'd throw in a different idea.

Did the trailer thing. Go to Harbor Freight and for $230 you can buy a complete trailer (less plywood decking). Add the decking. It has stake pockets. You can make a frame that fits the front and back pockets to hold the canoe(s). I have mine set up to carry 2 kyaks and 1 15' canoe at the same time. I can remove the racks for the canoe and use it as a 4 X 8 flat bed or put on stake racks. The one in Harbor Freight even folds up.

I agree with the other post that uses a pickup, if you have one. We do quite a bit of canoeing and use canoe racks. I made mine from pressure treated wood designed to slide right in between the wheel wells. The front cross board is about 4" to 6" higher than the cab of the truck and the rear one is about 6" or 8" lower than the front one. This allows you to slide the canoe right on the rack with out hitting the roof of the truck. I use a turn buckle on the each front upright to the trucks front box pockets. This makes the whole settup VERY stable. When we get back home the rack slides out and I store the canoe on it till next trip. I don't remember what it cost me to make but was under a hundred, hardware and all. It takes up a little space in the truck but we still have room for every thing else. Motors,(yes motors on canoes) gas tanks, tents, tarps, coolers, stoves, etc..... If it won't fit in the truck it won't all fit in the canoe. Also it is MUCH harder to back a truck with a trailer down a rough river bank. Don't know if any of this applys to your intended use but is what most of us around here do. Good luck.

I bought a cheap small trailer from Northern. Put a long tongue (square tubing) and sideboards on trailer. Carried the canoe on top, upside down and gear in the trailer. Bow of canoe rested on a pedestal on the tongue and stern on trailer endgate.

Have not got into building one yet,but have seen several lite duty trailers with rear axle from Omni/Horizon fwd cars and or Caravan minivans,Junkyards should be full of em.Believe they all had leaf spring rear suspension.

Or check Northern Tool, they have a complete light axle setup(springs/axle/hubs) for like$130 or a mini trailer kit for $160,and even a 600# boat trailer for $300.

Best way to carry a canoe on top of the car or truck! Even a cheap canoe weighs only 70 - 80 lb or so - easy for a one person to put up/take down alone. With two people loading it's a snap. Also car-topping a canoe MUCH easier than towing a trailer, finding a place to park it, store it in the off season, etc.

However if you are still bent on a trailer, look around for a used lightweight boat trailer. A roadworthy 14-footer can often be found for $100 - $200. Then build some bunks from 2x4's etc. and it will carry 4 (or even 6) canoes at once.

It's real common around here to grab a complete rear axle assembly from a GM "X" car (Celebrity, Ciera, etc.),and build a half ton trailer with it. They are about 4 feet between the hubs, and can be had with decent rubber and even hub caps for $50-75. You will need springs yet, but this should cut the bill in half, while getting improved weight capacity. My .02!

Go to your local scrap yard and grab the rear axle springs and all from a chrysler product minivan.
