I have a 4 ft bury hydrant that quit working. The pump is not running on, so it doesn't seem to be leaking? Can this be fixed from on top, or do I dig it up? The rod inside appears to be going up and down, but no sign of pressure. Thanx, Irv

If the rod is working up and down your problem could be the rubber end is not screwed onto the rod. In my system the pressure will push it out, yours may be different. Take the spout off and lift up the rod - you can screw the rubber seal on if it's stuck at the bottom with a little patience. While you'v got it apart fire up the pump to blow out any adventitious dirt before reassembly. Also put a little bag balm on the rubber end.

Make sure the rod is moving. I thought the same with mine and the handle was slipping on the rod.

Irv,depending on how old it is replace it. I played with mine for awhile until I just dug it up and replaced it. They don`t make these like they use to. Mine was only 3 years old when it started to give me trouble but I use it twice a day. I have another one in the ground that is 15 years old and use it often and haven`t had any trouble out of it.
