Does it say P&O or Pickled & Oiled anywhere? Cold rolled doesn't bend well when you get up to about 14 gauge sheet, (.075). When we need to have the characteristics of hot rolled without the mill scale we order hot rolled p&o. It has been acid dipped (pickled)to remove the dark blue scale, and then oil dipped to kill the action of the acid. Try touching a corner of it with a grinder. Not too many of the stainless steels will throw sparks like mild steel. I can't readily describe the look, (T-Bone did a pretty good job) except that p&o is a duller finish than #2 stainless, but you almost have to see them together until you get used to them.

i have to dissagree with you about could roll not bending well, here at work we have a job that involves bending 11 gauge for making frames that are used in power door openers. they bend lots of full 90 deg bends and even one that is like forming a channel where the part is actualy drawn down into the square die by a square edged punch and we have never had any bending problems that i am aware of

could it be HR and acid cleaned. the acid cleans off the scale to keep from dulling dies as fast. if they sold you ss, it was a pretty bad mistake on their part.

Hi bob,

SS, 300 series is not magnetic while the 400 series is and will rust to some extent. White looking finish or dull chrome would describe it. 2B or X finishs will look more white gray because of the surface graining of the finish.

Cold roll. no "hard" scale, smooth silver blueish gray finish usually oil covered. Deminsions are very close.

They could have just grabbed the wrong sheet and gave you CR.

HR used is dark blueish to black gray and usally a ruff surface finish when comparred to CR.

Dear DOB, Got a magnet? If it sticks to your sheet it's not stainless. If it's not black but stiff and kinda shiny it's probably cold rolled.
If it's cold rolled it will also be tougher to cut with tin snips and if you get it wet it'll rust right away. Have fun with it.

Stainless steel is heavier . Hot roll is rough surface, varied outside dimensions. Cold roll is standard dimension -.0001 tolerance, smmoth surfaced and oiled. Cold rolled steel round stock or flat stock. I use cold roll round often to fit pillow block bearing. Use cold roll 1018 often for machinist tool making at work.
