Can someone help me quiet down a Tecumseh 10 HP engine on a generator, so it can be used at a camp site? The model # is HM100 159402P. Engine Family # is WTPKS 3582BA. No one around here can find a quieter muffler than what's on it. Thanks for your time. Jim

I "had" a Kohler powered generator/welder. I tried everything (mufflers ect..) to quiet it down and still be mobile. I never did get it quiet enough for me. Soo, it's gone!! The only answer i KNOW will work, you aren't going to like, sell it and buy a HONDA generator!! Along with being quiet, you'll use a lot less fuel, and it will last enough longer to be worth the extra $$ it will cost you. Robert

We purchased a heavy 100 foot 10/4 cable and set the generator on the other side of camp where nothing would reflect the sound back. Also used a cheapy oval auto muffler stuck over the end of the factory round muffler on the generator. Adding five feet of flex pipe after the auto muffler cut the noise a suprising amount. Easiest and best is just purchase a real quiet generator and a long HD power cord.

Don't laugh! I had an 8hp B&S that was one loud son of a gun. I buried a metal 5 gallon can and piped the exhaust to it, then on the opposite side of the lid, I put a small 1" stack a couple of feet up. You could barely tell it was running. Used it for a long time like that. So now, when we set a natural gas compressor on a lease where noise is a problem, we bury a 55 gallon drum and do the same thing and it does the job everytime. We get several years out of it.

I had several custom built mufflers made before that and they couldn't do the job. One other thing is to buy one of those nice $200 Honda mufflers and adapt it, but I'll stick to the bucket and time. Be sure to put a foot or so dirt over the top of it.

Excellent idea, and I'm glad to hear it works, because I had the same one, only haven't done it yet. We have a deer camp that I'd like to have a generator at, and even though the deer don't seem to be bothered by the comings and goings of twenty or so guys throughout the week, a noisy generator would ruin the "ambience" of the campsite. The only possible solution I could figure would be running the exhaust pipe underground, but I just haven't got around to it yet. Thanks for the verification that it will work.

Hi Jim,

Another suggestion!

I boondock camp at 9000ft, 6 months a year. I use one Unisolar 64watt unbreakable PV, about $325 delivered, for normal lights, furnace and water pump useage perday in Arizona. That US-64 was enough for when the sun was out 8hrs per day. When the rainy(monsoon) season hits then I had to add one more US-64 PV in parallel to keep up as I only get full sun 4hrs a day. I use two, 105amp/hr deep cycle 12v battery's.

The US-64 will putout 4amps@15vdc for each PV full sun and 2amps@15vdc in cloudy weather. As you can see, I've done extensive testing on the US-64 so it does work as advertised. I also use small 400w invertor for about 15 minutes a day. I use 12vdc floresence lights, NO 12v filimate lights. A typical RV LP furnace uses about 4.5amps and cycles two times per hour for a total 20 minute run time every hour.

This will be my 3rd year with this set-up and it works well. I left the generator at home and love that piece and quite of the solar and so do the elk!

T-Bone,
Do you have a link to a site that has those PV panels?
Thanks,Chris

Hi Jim

While the other post delved into ediquet at campgrounds it did not address your question.
About the only thing you can do is use an automotive system, ie- a muffler, then a resonator - linclon or caddy style. Stop around
a few junkyards. These things take up some room
and connecting them with a flex pipe that can be easily diconnected for travel would be good.
Some campgrounds prohibit generators, some
limint hours for using and some "if you can start it, run it" rules. ALways check, Wife and I
have camped for years with an RV and still do
but the last few years we tend toward electric,
water, store , laundromat stage show - age I guess.
Have a great summer
Bob

Jim, my wife and I camped and traveled this country for fourty years....the good guys that has consideration for others do not run their generators,in camp....if electric was not available, we ask others if we could run it long enough to make coffee.....Best to stop where you have hook ups or don't use it.....

he just said camp site, not campground, he could be using it in the middle of nowhere for all we know, and besides he is wanting to quiet it down so it doesnt bother whoever would be bothered anyhow, i dont see what he is doing wrong here, and besides if he stopped where you didnt have hookups like you said, then some generator use would be pretty much expected i would think
