Is there a stud finder out there that will detect a stud through tile AND wallboard in a bathroom??

Ed: most of the newer electronic stud finders should do this. I have a Zircon that will find studs through 5/8" sheet rock and 1/4" paneling. There are also special "deep scan" stud finders that will go up to 1' or more in the right circumstances--they're used more in industrial settings with thicker factory walls, and cost a good deal more than a typical "homeowner" model.

Thanks Tim, you were a great help. Can't say that for the other guys though.

Ed: No problem--that's what we're all here for! I'd be interested in knowing how you made out. T-bone's comment about speed of movement is accurate--mine will also go out of adjustment if you move it too quickly. We'd be interested in knowing how you make out!

Tim-----purchased and used stud finder. Works fine except where I wanted it to. Don't know what was behind the tile but it was extremely hard. Difficult to drill. Whatever it was would not let me get an accurate reading. Still got the job done though.

Ed: I'm not sure to be happy that it worked, or unhappy that it didn't do what you wanted it to! However, for the price, they're a handy tool to have around--they beat the old magnet variety hollow. Of course, the magnet ones are better than none at all--I've been there, and my ears aren't good enough to locate studs by tapping, at least on a consistent basis. Good luck with the safety bars!

Never used an electronic finder yet so I'll be learning something. Haven't purchased one yet but will soon. Need to install safety bars in tiled shower. That will be something new too. Can be tegious I understand.

Hi Ed,

Yep at any hardware store. They work really well but with mine, about 15yrs old, the slower I move it across the wall the more accurate it is. I used for rewiring a house and only missed one time in 35 boxes placed.
