I assume you are talking about metal cutting band saws. I use Ellis. They are very nice unit, cut angles with out moving steel,is a dry saw also which I like,I have cut up to 12 inch I beam and did nice job. I also use it to cut lumber. Most important part is match saw blade to what you are cutting. I would choose Ellis again period. Rick

I won't say any of these manufacturers make a bad saw...I will say that they are of foreign manufacture...designed more to wear out instead of wearing in. If you want a GOOD saw...an AMERICAN manufactured saw like a Kalamazoo or a Wells saw will last a small regular user for a lifetime with proper maintenance...but everything comes with a price. If you have sons that are mechanical...as you are...they might have a falling out over who gets it after you're gone. Sorry about reallity and real tools. L8R....Fred OH

I think you can usually assume that when someone asks a question like that they are not ready to spend the jack for top quality expensive tools. Otherwise they would not ask because they would already know the answer. They would have already been over the to Production Tool Supply house and been home with their kazoo or wilton. Besides I don't think any American company sells a saw that small. Ok, Wells sells a 7x11 but it goes for almost $3k.

Yeah, but the other choice is to get a good used one. I have a nice, used, Wilton that I bought after tiring of a cheapie. Ebay worked for me. And my many miter cuts on 3" pipe today were great, and fast.

I was looking at the 3130 Wilton on the southern tool web site. I'm thinking about ordering one but I dont know if I should get the wet kit with it as it will be in a none heated shop where it could see -20 degrees.

Mpj, you're tougher than I am to work in a shop that cold. Or, for that matter, to live somewhere that it gets that cold! When I got my (dry) saw I asked this board if I should get the wet kit. Response was "no", if I didn't mind going a little slower. I have no trouble with dry cutting but I've not tried wet. It sure feels great to be confident in the cut and compared to the cheapie I had, it's incredibly fast, even dry.

I assume from the size you are referring to a metal cutting saw. Grizzley sells a few in that size range - link attached. On Amazon you can find a 6x4 Jet bandsaw. Its much cheaper at Menards if you have one near you. The TSC tractor supply stores have a Clark brand that is similar to the Jet.
