I was looking at futhering my array of metal-working tools and getting a torch outfit is the next step. I was just looking for all of ya'lls opinion on what name brand was preferred such as Victor or Harris, or if the cheap sets were just as good. Thanks for your time!

So there you have it....Smith and Victor are the two top rated torches for most blue wrench users. Personally, I have several torches that I use and all are Smith brand...from hand torches to machine torches using accetylene or propane...you would think that anyone that takes enough pride in the manufacture of their product to chrome plate it...should be putting their best in it. But...one of the guys that learned the trade at my shop and is now in business for himself in another state has switched to the Victor brand. I had an old one someone had donated to me and i gave it to him. He was a good employee. I'm not gonna change...too late in the game...even though I bought two parts for a Smith machine torch recently at $50 each...I will just do a bunch of advertising for the Delille Oxygen Co. in Wilmington, Ohio as rippers. L8R....Fred OH

I`m a union ironworker and use a torch everyday. Almost every job site I work on has a Victor Jouneryman torch to work with. Harris and Smith are thought of as a second rate torch set-up around here but should work good as a seldom used home tool.

I like the Victor Journeyman, as that is what I have used most. Don't like the smaller bodied torches. Buy an off brand outfit for friends and neighbors to borrow. Any torch with a clean, right size tip works well.

I've been very happy with my Smith "Cavalier" set. Lifetime guarantee.

I'm sure Victor and Harris are fine, but you'll have problems getting parts and service on "no-name" brands.

I've had Victor, Harris, Marquette and Smiths. I wouldn't trade my Smiths for anything other than a new Smiths. It has a lifetime warranty. My opinion.

I have used Victor and Smith a good bit. I like the Victor better. I forget if it was called the Contractor or Journeyman series.

Your right about the Journeyman. That is an extremely popular torch that is found on just about any job site, I have never walked into a welding supply that didn't have any part I needed. I feel they are very proud of the repair parts, but heck, how often do you have to rebuild one.

Hi Matthew,

I like the Victor 100. It's a small bodied torch that will cut upto 3" but gives excellant cut control with 3/16" hose. A #3 tip works well. For bench plate cutting a larger torch works ok as hand fatique is not too much of a problem but cutting pipe, out of flat position or reaching, bevels, then hand fatique becomes a real problem with the larger torch and hose.

There's nothing wrong with the rest of the brands but none makes a small bodied torch like Victor 100.

T-Bone, are you a pipefitter. The pipe bevelling comment would lead me to think you are.

Hi SHeiserman,

No, I retired from the sheet metal trade. I did alot of SS, steam and reefer piping that was pipefitter work. I always enjoyed running pipe weather SM or heavy pipe so alot of work was donated to me as most guys didn't like pipe as it took to much thinking.

Interesting. Why can't tinners use rubber mallets? I seen last week they have an electric 'hammer' that bangs real fast. Do you still have all your hearing? Take care.
