Bought mine about 25 yrs back. Here in the Province of Ontario, individuals can legally own only the 'B' acetylene tank and the 80 Cu. ft. oxygen tank ( about three feet tall ). The supplier takes care of the 'B' tank maintenance and the individual takes care of the oxygen tank, which must be re-certified every ten years. If your supplier switches tanks, and is the caring type, he will give you a newer one at each re-fill. Be cautious about buying used tanks as they may be both out of date and stolen which will render them useless when it comes to getting them re-filled. Know the regulations in your Prov. or state before getting taken.

Leasing or buying depends on your perspective and the local costs. In 1958, I leased tanks for 10 years- the time zipped by. At renewal time, the cost was up considerably. I bought mine in 1968 and that expense has not been repeated.

Is there a time limit on these tanks like with propane tanks? I have two acetylene tanks and an oxygen tank that are really old. They were my fathers. He used them occasionally, they are mine now and nearly empty.

I guess the best deal varies from state to state, but in Maine, leasing the bottles is the way to go. $100 for five years, refills for a standard 02 tank run less than $30, roughly the same for acetylene.
