This may be a bit off-topic, but I suspect some of you will be able to help.

I have a 55 gallon white plastic drum of the kind that they sold a lot of for Y2K drinking water storage, and that horse folks cut off for water for the horses.

I need to find a plug for one of the holes in the lid. There are two holes - one is probably something like a 2" pipe thread, but the other is a very coarse 2" thread. The fitting for a hand-cranked pump fits the pipe thread, but I'd like to find a plug for the other. I'l going to use it for diesel fuel storage. Obviously, I could find a fuel resistant stopper for it, but would like to be able to screw it in tight.

I checked some local hardware stores that I thought might have them, but so far haven't found them.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have used this method for years, its ok.
JOHN DEERE NOW EVEN TELLS YOU NOT TO STORE DIESEL IN METAL CANS DUE TO "GALVANIC" CORROSION.
THE ZINC REACTS TO THE WAX/SULFER CREATING A JELL THAT WILL DESTROY YOU'R INJECTERS AND FUEL PUMP.!!!!! !

I don't know about a drum but I do keep my diesel fuel in plastic 6 gal. cans. Never had a problem with it. Some has set for over a year. I do however keep them full and use the entire can when I refuel. I was concerned about condensation too so I went this route. Let me know if you want a plug. Chris

Hello, This may not be what you want to hear, but I'm gonna have to support Alvin. For month or less storage,INSIDE,you may be OK. BUT for any length of time I would look for a metal container and store it inside. Plastic tends to "sweat" much worse than metal.

Well now, between Pat and Alvin, I may have to rethink this. My plan was to fill it in the spring and probably have it empty by fall. In the meantime, I'd store it outside in a partially closed 5 x 10 ft. metal shed on the side of my barn. It will be shaded, but it's on the south-side, so will get some sun. The shed will have insulation inside the roof, and the two open ends (east and west facing) will provide ventilation, so I think the temperature will stay reasonable.

I guess the result is, while the fuel won't deteriorate like it would storing for a year, neither will it be pump-fresh throughout its use.

What's the main reason it deteriorates? I would gues it doesn't react chemically with the plastic. Is it condensation? Or is it evaporation of volatiles?

Thanks for your opinions! I'd sure welcome others.

I never heard of that either. Since most new tractor fuel tanks are plastic and the fuel is in them for decades, I'm not seeing the problem either?

Metal sweats with rapid temp changes in a day. Plastic doesn't contain as much heat/cold in it, so I would think the problem would be less than with metal.

Don't know tho.

A little Power Service or their Klean product should stablize it fine, if you need to at all.

There are several additives out there that prevent diesel deterioration, I believe they are biocides to prevent "growth" when contaminated with water.

No Problem Chuck. Guess I was thinking long term, like you fill it and leave it stand for a year in the plastic barrel, than the only thing it is good for is starting brush fires.. Short term storge, like a month or so, no problem. I found out the hard from the school of hard knocks

You can also get adaptors that fit the course thread holes and reduce them to standard pipe thread.

If this will post one source I use is :

Chuck , Check around any food processing plants, industrial plants, car washes, hospitals or laundrys. Almost all plastic drums use the bung plugs you want. They are replaced with new when the drums are refilled.

Alvin...Thanks for the comment. I wondered about that, so checked on one of the YT forums before I went ahead with my plans. The unanimous opinion was, "no problem." Too bad you didn't get in on that one. Would have been an interesting discussion. In any case, I guess I'll go ahead and try it...I'm afraid you're outnumbered! :)

Ray...OK, will try that.

Chris(WA)...I'll check recyclers first, then if no luck, will e-mail you. That way, you won't have to go to the trouble if I can find one locally. They have to be around - just haven't asked the right people! I'm near the TriCities (Richland, Pasco, Kennewick) in south-central WA.

Thanks all!

Look in the phone book for drum recyclers. You should find anything connected in thier catalog.
