Got a 88 Chev. Suburban. After running a while the speedometer quits. Always works when it is cold. It has on rare occasions started again while running. Is it the cable. speedo, gear in trans, or ???.

David, I can't remember if your suburban had a "cable" or "electronic" driven spedo in it. G.M. made the change on trucks in the same time frame as your truck. If it is a cable driven spedo a couple of things you might check are the "driven gear" on the transmission output shaft(if the clip that holds the driven gear on the shaft is broken or missing it will allow the plastic gear to slip when it gets hot), the ends on the cables to see if they are worn round, the cruise control module that the cables go in, (there are gears in it that can slip), also make sure the cable isn't laying on the exhaust. Does it just quit? Or does it jump up & down then quit? Or does it loose speed slowly then quit?.. If it is an electronic spedo then it could be anything from a loose wire to the current limiter in the head. If its an electronic system let me know & I will dig up my old service manuals & talk you through some tests.

I have the same type of problem with my 88GMC 2500 - except i cannot predict when it will work/fail.

The cable is not a mechanical drive, but an electronic pickup from a 'gear' on the transmission shaft. I would like some advice/opinion whether the problem is in the cable or the speedo head.

You only get what you deserve. What would you expect from a Chevy?
