I have a 2001 250SD with 5.4- great truck, but will agree that when you have a 24ft goosneck & a couple antique tractors you're quite short on power, or as it seems to me ,the a4od trans downshifts way too early, can't use anywhere near all the power that's available. If you are doing a lot of towing I'd consider a manual trans. The only problem I've had is the lower ball joints started squeaking at around 30000 mi.-were non greasable. The dealer raplaced them under warranty, but still had all the inconvience to deal with. I took a 4100mi trip in 2001& averaged 16mpg with a topper& about a 1000lb load. was satisfied with the mileage as I probably grossed over 7000lbs for the whole trip. If I were buying again I MIGHT consider a Diesel, but I only pull a trailer maybe 2-5% of the time, so the 5.4 is a good comprimise, & very adequate for normal use.

Have a 2002 reg cab,with 5.4.Decent truck,but seems underpowered,even empty(has auto,and 3.73s).Have pulled 10,000lbs a few times.Should've gone diesel.Would've saved enough in fuel to pay for the Powerstroke.

I have a 1999 V10, and have had no problems with it in 60000 miles. I pull flatbed and dump trailers. The flat trailer is usually loaded with 15,000 lbs of tractors (& including weight of trailer). I get around 9 mpg pulling this. Empty I run about 12-15mpg. My wife has a 2002 F250 Powerstroke (license reads HER F250). She has about 13,000 miles and no problems. She gets 14-18mpg empty and when pulling her tractors & trailer (roughly 10,000lbs) averages 12 mpg. Both have got plenty of power and torque.
When trucks are weighted equally and we are travelling together, they both have about the same power when it comes to running the hills and mountains. The V10 has 4:30 gears and standard transmission, the Powerstroke is automatic with 3:73. No complaints from us! (First On Race Day!)

I bought the 2003 Ford F-350 4 x 4 SRW with the 6.8 V-10 gas engine & automatic transmission not much more in price it has 9900 LB. GVWR & the 4.30 limited-slip rearend I got it to
pull a 10,000 LB. GVWR 18'foot Flatbed Trailer on the frame mount trailer hitch with 5000 to 5200 LB. of Tractor & Plow on the Trailer plus my 1700 LB. truck camper in the box at the same time I only get about 9 miles to a gallon but it sure will pull a lot the truck is rated for 12,500 LB. weight-distributing & 13,500 LB. fifth-wheel
I got the truck at Christmas time & have 2700 miles on it right now so far all I have hauled is a light-duty 16'foot car trailer with a 4000 LB. car on it a cross a lawn & up on to road & back off road into a ditch to unload never did spin a wheel in 4 x 4 Low
so I say you should have got the F-350 with the 6.8 V-10 engine p.s. I do not have any problums with my engine or drive train

Sounds like you got a pretty good truck. Ford hasnt made a so called heavy duty gas engine in some time as they want to promote their powerstroke. The problem is that they stick this light duty engines in these big trucks. I am afraid that you are going to be greatly disappointed when you hook it to the trailer. I think you will find it slightly underpowered. The greatest problem with the engine is that they blow the spark plugs out of the heads. Ford added aluminum heads to their engines, but forgot to put the cast iron inserts in the spark plug holes, so it strips the sparkplug holes rendering the head ruined. A new head has to be purchased. Ford has refused to recall this most likley because it would break them to fix all of the tritons that are ont the road. Maybe you can look into gettig a powerstroke. I am brand blind, but I think maybe you would find a chevrolet with a big block very useful for your particular application. The new 8.1 liter would be nice 340 horsepower.

I have a 2002, F250 super duty and my son has a F250 crew cab. Both have the 5.4 liter engine with the E4OD transmission. These transmissions were built after the transmission mechanical diode fiasco so they supposedly will last more than 5,000 miles. The engines however have a problem. The engines on ocassion will not run properly when first started in the morning. They will idle just fine but as soon as the accelerator is pressed they want to bog down and die. So when that happens we just idle them in gear and slowly drive away untl after about 5 minutes they seem to clear up and run just fine. The dealer has looked them over and installed a diagnostic computer and cannot find what the problem is. I think I'll try a different brand or powertrain next time. It is a shame that when you pay $30,000 for a new vehicle it runs so poorly. That is still a lot of money when you factor in taxes a person has to earn at least $50,000 in order to spend $30,000. The other issue is it gets about 13 MPG max (manual four wheel drive). That was not a big surprise.

Vern, the problem on your truck could be the EGR valve sticking, the dealer {Ford] put it on the tester and found nothing. Drove it out of the shop and the engine would faulter, stall and untill up to speed. I took it back to the dealer and told him to replace the EGR that was 2 yrs ago. EGR will not trip an error and be tested by replacing the gasket with a solid gasket, if it clears up you got it. Do a search on Google.com for EGR valves and you will be see the problems these little buggers can cause.

The 5.4 is a bit small for a truck that weighs over 3 tons empty. The truck will handle more than you can comfortably move, for occaisonal towing you will be fine on flat land.

Tow more than it can stop. Guy I farm with (we share a lot of equip) has 2, a 99 and an 01. Both have powerstrokes so he obviously has more power. We (I run Dodge 2500's) regularly scale GCVW of 30,000-32,000 (I know, way over). He and I both run together when loaded the similar. Got over 100,000 miles on all of them, worst thing has been a front axle bearing. Main problems we have had are front brakes. You should easily be able to pull 20,000.

David, when backing to adjust your rear brakes, occasionally you must stop rather violently and come to a complete stop the get the rear self-adjusters to function properly. Dodge has a TSB out stating that when regularly operating near or at max. GVW you should install 1T rear wheel cylinders to maximize rear braking potential. Hope you can use this.

RayIN,
The super dutys have 4 whl. discs-shouldn't have to adjust the service brakes-(only the inner parking brakes)!!

David,
I'm having a horrible time with my '00 F-350 PSD SRW 4x4 brakes too. Dads '99 F-350 PSD DRW 2x4 never had any brake issues until he wore the pads out @ 70K-but that is understandable. I seem to get about 8K between rotor changes-vibrations are unbarable and at unsafe levels. Once the dealer checked them on the trk. and the rear rotor was .031 out(not the first sign of heat marks- noted on work order)-quite a bit when cruising @ 70 on the interstate! As soon as it hit 36,000 the dealer was "unable to help out any longer" The truck has been parked over a year now waiting for Ford to figure something out.

Always liked Ford 'til this, but you can only take so much! I had an '86 F-350 6.9 diesel that was a dream - could get over 100K on the pads before changing, I sold the truck with 480K on it(second eng. and rebuilt the 4spd once(synchonizers)) I GUESS THEY JUST DON"T MAKE THEM LIKE THAT ANY MORE!

I hope you guys have much better luck than I did, Pat
