Just wanted to get some ideas from everybody about air hose reels. Should I buy it or make it. What are the most reasonable to buy that will hold 50' of hose that doesn't have to retract.

I'd vote for the Rapid Reel. I've got three of them, one of which will hold 100' of hose. They're a little cashy, but I think they're the best. I've had a couple different brands.

They are the smoothest to operate and are made of excellent quality components.

I bought a Rapid Reel (rapidreel.com) some years ago and so far so good. You just pull the hose out and when finished hand crank it back on. It mounts just about anywhere and works great.

I hope this helps...

I bought a cheap spoke model and put a ring around each side so the hose doesn't run off between the spokes. This really works good. Holds about 80 ft.

I bought a spoke model from Harbor Freight for around $20. I suggest buying vs. building, because you can buy one so cheap. By the time you get the parts asembled you will likely spend more than a bought one and still not have it built.

Also, I don't recommend the spoke model because the hose easily gets caught on the spoke when pulling or reeling in. If I had to do it over (and am seriously thinking of it) I would buy the circular model so the hose doesn't catch.

I got a USA Lisle on sale for $50 ten years ago that still works great. This summer I got an import for $10 at a Homier tent sale in NH(no sales tax) that seems to use slightly lighter guage steel. We'll see how it lasts.
