I bought two Speedaire compressors for my auto repair shop. Seven horsepower models, with 80 gallon vertical tanks, two stage. They made so much noise and vibrated like crazy. The drive pulley on the compressor flew off a couple of times. The line from the compressor to the tank vibrated and broke in half right at the compressor head. It took both of them running constantly to run my blast cabinet. They also created huge electric bills, since they ran constantly. I got rid of them and bought a used Quincy single stage, ten horsepower. The Quincy will pump up and shut off, even while I am using the blast cabinet! No more compressors for me that don't say Quincy on them. You get what you pay for..... ..... Regards..... P

According to the tech. that I spoke to at Grainger a couple of weeks ago, all of their Speedair compressors are being furnished by Cambell Hausfield this year. They bid this out every year or so, that means you never know who builds them. Parts are generally discontinued after a few years by Grainger, however the OEM may continue to sell parts.

Now, with that all said. I have been buying the SpeedAires with Hondas and Kohler engines for 10 years now, all for everyday commercial use. I have 10 that I have locally and they have performed excellent. I have two that developed a slight knock in the compressor so I had the mechanics bring them in, only to find the oil had never been changed, was white gravy, and the air elements were missing. They no longer work for us. I took one of the compressors and changed the oil in the engine and comp. about 4 times and finally got it looking good. I ran it all day at the ranch and it never did knock again. Couldn't believe it. The 30 gallon tank had the drain plug plugged off. I must have drained 8 to 10 gallons of water out of it. No wonder the tank rusted out!!!

So, I have told you the good and the bad, but the fact is, no matter the brand, that doesn't mean they make it, nor does it mean they will sell parts for ever, but the Speedaire I have have lasted very well, even through the abuse they've had.

Good luck with your purchase, hope others contribute their opinions as well.

Just a little Speedaire trivia. I recently got a compressor with a ~20 year old Speedaire pump. Turns out that back then, Champion (big $$ company) made their pumps, and mine is still a current Champion model.

Yes, I've been using Speedaire compressors for over 20 years and had very good luck with them, that was why I was suprised to find that out. The guy did state they build to Grainer specs. however true that may be. Just for the record, I'm not putting them down, just stating a little aggravation on parts availablity, however all manufactures are doing that now days. Don't repair it, change it. When was the last time you saw a TV guy solder in a new cap? Heck, they just swap parts (boards) or tell you to buy a new TV. It's what the majority of the world has gone to.

I was shocked to hear from one of the repair men here stated IR are junk now. Hopefully, he was talking about the Cheaper line. Most manufactures are making a cheap line for the discount stores in order to compete, can you blame them?

The bottom line is, buy the best you can afford and determine if it will fit your needs. A forum like this is an excellent place to get tips before buying.
