Stihl chainsaw

I just replaced the rings in my Stihl 045AV. At first, I was disappointed with the lack of improvement in the compression. Now after approx. 15 running minutes the compression seems to be slowly increasing. Is this normal? What is the normal break-in time?

Also, the crankcase is leaking a substantial amount of bar oil from the gasket behind the muffler. Instead of taking the saw completely apart is there some sort of sealant I can use that the muffler will not wreck. I've used a spray-on silicone, and Permatex No. 2A (I think) non-hardening sealer. The second sealant lasted a bit longer but both ultimately failed.

Thanks, Chris B.

Is the gasket broken or just out of place?

Gasket is still place, but I can see oil seep through it. I guess it is just deteriorated.

Break-in time is considered about one tank at idle speeds. Also remember that in 2-stroke engines, the condition of the piston and cylinder are very important.

I'd bite the bullet and fix the gasket. An 045 is still an expensive saw. Don't Mickey Mouse it.

Are you saying that I should let the saw idle till the gas runs out, or is that just a measurement of time?

There's quite a bit of leeway, but most folks will run out a full tank at idle. At least don't do any cutting or full-throttle running until it's broken in. Make sure your mixture's adjusted correctly, BTW.
