Any books out there that explains how to ID the different drill bits? Have a box of yard sale drill bits. Some are very heavy? Colbalt maybe? some have a yellow tint with a ring around the end. Some are black, slightly heavy with a similar ring. Others have the carbide tips. These are all made in USA bits? thanks!

Very heavy could be solid carbide. A yellowish color could be TIN coated, a coating that makes them tougher and last longer and drill better. Darker is a coating for certain metals, and silver is genearlly uncoated. Coatings are not usually necessary for the average guy drilling steel. Just sharpen them up and use them, see how they work. You will need a special wheel though if you have any carbide.
