I placed an online order last week, and recieved an automated order#. I have not ever received any email stating they shipped, so I got online and checked my order status and it says it's unavailable (It's said that all week). I called them to check on it and they told me they couldn't check the status because they had computer problems, and wait for 10 to 14 days and I should get my order. That makes me feel a lot better - Not!

Does it normally take a long time for them to process an order? Do they email a confirmation when they ship?

Curious on your experiences since this was my first order from them.

Skinner,
I received one of those 8" grinders for X mas, "ordered" through the catalog. I bought one not knowing of my gift. I went to the local store "1 hour away" to return the catalog unit " I already used the store bought unit. They said that they will not return catalog items in the retail store. The grinder was sure different than any they had on the shelf. Anyway I missed the return time frame and now I am stuck with 2 peices of JUNK!!!!

don't know where you're located but how far are you from their retail store ??? the stores will honor the catalog sale prices and you can save the shipping cost.. we have a store locally here and it's nice and convenient... you can pick up stuff and look at the quality before you buy... If it's less than a hundred miles and it's a big purchase... I'd consider the drive..

Have used HBF for over twenty years. They have never stiffed me; some stuff, however, takes a while to get to me. I had the BEST CP 1/2 air wrench. The cheap China IR knock off I bought from HBF will out gun it hands down, for over a decade. The drill bits mentioned by another are the BEST I have ever seen. At twenty years old, I was offered more than the new cost for their 600 lb 3/4 torque wrench. I am sure that they have some "lesser" quality stuff; who doesn't? The brand name on my wrenches doesn't get anything done; it is the quality of the tool. I intend to continue buying HBF because of the good value.

I think everybody has pinpointed it. I have ordered from Harbor Freight for quite a few years. Here is what I have learned:
1. If you order it, plan on at least 3 weeks before it shows up
2. If you order it, there is about a 60% chance it will be back ordered
3. If you order it, there is about an 80% chance it was made in China (except went to a store and bought an anvil-was made in Russia)
4. Some stuff is good, some not so good. The Harbor Freight brand stuff is not usually precision stuff, but for beatin' around the barn, it is not too bad.

For the most part I will buy things but realize what I am getting. I have bought the nut, bolt and washer assortment a number of times - not too bad.

Long and short-it will take a while and it ain't Mac or Craftsman.

That's not been my experiences with ordering on line with them. I normally get the e-mail confirmation in a matter of minutes. A letter of confirmation comes in a few days. The package comes within a week or two with an invoice.

Currently I've got one item on back order, but they've been very good about keeping me abreast of it via snail mail.

Ive order off and on for quite a few years now.. Just received yesturday an order I placed three weeks ago..I had ordered to battery maintainers. I got the same response you did. wait 10-14 days. They came on the last day...I found that if you pay shipping you'll get them faster. I usually try to order when they give out coupons or free shipping. But if they pay shipping you will wait. Also my maintainers were back ordered so.....

kinda interesting though...Had to laugh when i received them I noticed a sticker on them saying made in the U.S.A. ...Removed label and underneath was made in China...hahahaha

Also if you know what you want and they have it you can get some good stuff HOWEVER most stuff is cheep thus the cost..I ordered a sand blaster..cheep and it was cheep..then again i ordered a reconditioned Dewalt hammer drill and it was better than half price new and I got it and it works Great...

shop wisely

Somewhere I remember seeing a Made in USA sticker on top of a Made in China sticker. Maybe at HF. This is not legal. Imports must be marked with country of origin. This needs to be stopped because it's false labeling.

Yes, I had a free shipping coupon, but heck I ordered $150 worth of stuff and it said free shipping anyways, so I didn't bother to send in the coupon.

The biggest reason it bothers me, is I ordered a $169 metal band saw from them and recieved my automatic confirmation. I waited 2 weeks and never got it so I emailed them and got a reply to wait 1 more week. After waiting another week I called and found out the order was never placed because they couldn't verify my credit card. An easy problem that could have been fixed if they emailed me or called me. So I tend to get a little worried about these folks sometimes.

Most people that you order from online send you a tracking number or email saying "your order shipped" and it makes you feel a little better.
I'll just sit back and wait and see what happens.

PS. Has anyone ever bought or used their air powered needle scaler?

Hey Skinner,

I bought a $39 scaler from Northern. I love it - haven't used a chipping hammer since.

Used to order from them all the time with not much problem. Now they got a store 60 mi. from me, hit it about once a month. It is way better to see their stuff in person than have to send it back. Since they did that, it's about like the homecenter...can't leave w/out spending 50-100.

I have ordered from them online several times.Usually get a confirmation E mail within 5 min. Dont know why,but orders usually take 2-3 weeks to arrive. Some junk, but some great stuff too at super low prices if you catch it on sale.
Have used their chicago electric paddle switch 4-1/2 inch grinders for years. They are exactly like the one sold by black & decker for $60. The chicago electric version which is identical( I have swapped parts between the two so I know they are identical in every way) normally sells for $35-40 were on sale for $18 so I bought two extra just to set on the shelf untill I need them. Might be a while as the old one is 7 years old and going strong. Also bought 2 extra sets of silver & demming drills in wood case for $17 per set(8 drills 9/16-1 inch) Have used the first set for years and are as good as anything I have seen.

Hello Skinner,

My school orders some supplies from them. every once in a while the order gets "lost" for some reason or another. it takes a few phones calls and listening to a few lies, but sooner or later they always seem to come through in the end. I don't mind a cheap tool if i could get at least a one time use out of it. some of their stuff breaks during the first use, thats just money thrown away. they do offer some fair and good tools also.

I think what they do is wait untill they get a load of stuff going to one zone before they ship. I work at a post office and we will go weeks without seeing any harbor freight and then for a couple of days we will see tons of it and then back to nothing for a while again. Probably cheaper for them to ship a truck load from their warehouse to a regional center and then distribute from there
