What kind of oil is best to use on sharpening stones? Used to buy "honing oil" but can't find it anymore.
Thank you

The oil or water serves one purpose, to float the metal particles up off the stone, so it doesn't become inbedded, rendering the stone useless. I've used light motor oil for years on a hard stone, keep wiping when it gets that grey color. John in Ne.

I used 3in1 oil, not finding the honing oils any better, but after I bought a set of Japanese water stones 20 years ago I haven't touched my oil stones. The water stones cut much faster.

best lubricant is kerosene or varsol-we use that in the shop when honing cylinders.Regular oils are to thick and the steel residue clogs the stones too much ,especialy on the very fine stones.
