Timing a 6v pos ground tractor

I'm needing to check the timing on our tractor. How do I do this? I've timed many 12v neg systems, but don't know if the 6v pos can be done the same way. Can I use my timing light? When hooking it up, do I hook it to the pos or Neg?

Thanks for any help.

The easiest way is to connect the timing light to a 12 volt battery the normal way, and onto the tractors spark plug. I use a 12 volt battery on the floor boards. You could also park your car next to the tractor and use it's battery if the leads are long enough.

Your timing light may only be a 12v. light. Should say on it somewhere. It will also depend on how old the light may be. You can work around that though. Just hook the light up to a 12v battery setting close by and the electrode wire to the tractor. My 12v light works for me on 6v. systems this way.-----deadeye
