Brazing with propane

I am wondering about using propane to braze and steel weld. I have been told that it can not be used, the welded joints become brittle and will shatter like glass if dropped or hit?

I use propane for cutting and have had good luck with it. Using propane for welding would be great as I would have one less bottle to rent.

I forgot to mention that I also weld aluminum sheet metal. Could propane be used for this as well?? I currently use a bare aluminum rod and flux, have been told propane is incompatible for this usage as well.

Steel can be torch brazed with propane but cannot be torch welded with propane. An oxy-propane flame is too oxidizing when adjusted to temps high enough for torch welding. This is due to the fact that the flame temperature of propane is lower than that of acetylene. It's gross heat of combustion is higher..... ...making it more efficient for heating purposes.

Where an oxidizing flame is required,(such as in torch welding Cu based alloys)the use of propane as a fuel gas is accepted.

Aluminum requires a slightly reducing flame when welded with acetylene. For best visibility, control, and highest weld travel speeds, hydrogen is used as the fuel gas.
