While at a farm trade show one of the displays had the answer for high HP electric motors in single phase serviced applications. Up to 75HP, run at unity power factor, sycronous speed, equal to three phase efficiency and low starting in-rush current.

Interesting information. From the little that I know of synchronous motors, they require an auxiliary starting method. I suspect that starting torque may be quite low and maybe the motor would be brought up to speed and then the load engaged with a clutch or similar device.

G Taylor, did you notice if they had a set of collector rings to provide exitation to field poles? We had several of those here at the plant on large air compressors. Made back in the 20's or '30's. Used a strong field to make them syncronous, not induction motors.

And they are called Written Pole Motors, am i right?? If so, they start at U.S. $5000.00 for a small one, and U.S. 30,000.00 + for bigger ones. To spendy for me! Robert

They were the clever written pole design. Somebody was "thinking outside of the box" to come up with that idea. Where three phase isn't available from the grid and lots of HP is required they will often be the cheapest in the long run. Display was in building #5, to the south west area of the Convention center. Inside they were 1/2 way between the CIH display and the corridor to halls 3&4. They were back to back to "Central East Tractor Supply. The solar powered pond pumps & stock watering were at the end of the row. Link

So someone tell me, Are they too expensive to be of any practical use?? What would a 20 h.p. Cost??If they require a clutch then you might as well add another couple of grand to the price.

The written pole motor has as much starting torque as the high efficiency three phase motor of the same HP. Cost depends on what your time is worth, reliability of tinkered three phase convertors or pro-grade rotary convertors or better yet an invertor. The cost of running three phase service to your site vs the big single phase or converting? Would have to look at each case/application for the best choice. I would lean towards a single phase to three phase solid state invertor. Allows variable speed, variable starting torque and dynamic braking. Better for multiple motor loads or custom frame motors built into machinery.
