Welding goggles elastic woes....

Am I the only one that hates the elastic on my cutting torch goggles?

I've had a few different goggles for use with the acetylene outfit, but the darn elastic seems to stretch out permanently in just a few weeks or months, making the things worthless to stay on right.

Any suggestions for a different product or a good replacement for the cheap elastic provided with these goggles?

Bicycle rims have a narrow rubber strip which goes around the perimeter of the rim between the spoke ends and the tube to protect the tube. These are about a half inch wide, stretchable, and you could probably get several stretchies from one. If they are not strong enough single, you could double them up. You should be able to find them at any bike repair shop, maybe even WalMart or the hardware store, or if you have a junk bike rim around which is not in use, have at 'er.

I've just been using the elastic from worn-out underwear. It lasts OK, the wide band is a lot more comfortable, and you can't beat the price. My waist is twice as big as my head, so I get two bands from every pair I "ruin".....

The main thing is not to hang the googles by the elastic, yet that is usually where their found, hanging on the regulator handle or on a hook on the cart.

I have the same complaint and problem. In the 1960 thru 1970s area, welding supply companies sold solid rubber bands for the goggles.Ihave not seen thosein years.Ihave been wanting to go to a rubber miller supply house and ask to have them cut some strips. Glad you brought this up. I will find time for this soon and advise you if Iam successful. There has to be a solution to this everlasting problem.

I took the rubber out of my kid's snorkle mask. He broke the lens and I robbed the rubber pieces, it is adjustable and holds googles firmly. Has been working good for last 2 yrs. Good thing though I live so far back in the woods, no one from I-10 can see me in my get up. ;)

I cut a strip from discarded inner tube. If the tube is fairly new the strip last a long time.

Hi Jerry,

I like using #4 3/4 face shields. Works well and you don't have to worry about fitting over eye glass. There about $15 for the lens plus head gear if you don't have one.

I like to use the safety glasses that are shaded to a #5 shade. I buy them at HOLOX. Just an alternative to those heavy goggles.

You might try asking the wife for some elastic from her sewing basket. It comes in different sizes, strengths, and even colors.

I like the goggles with the ratchet band not unlike on a hood.
