Now that I've spent the last 2+ hrs. sharpening broken rings and beating my knuckles cleaning grooves, again, does anyone make a groove cleaner that dosen't destroy pistons? Had an el-cheapo that I never used before and threw it in the trash can after 1 round in first piston...chattered bad and got into the lands. Any home engineered ideas? Any info appreciated. Thanks.

I don't remember when or where I heard this but, try a Dentist tool. I got a few from my Dentist some time ago but haven't used them cleaning ring grooves yet. They are strong and great for cleaning small areas.

I hope this helps...

You may try Sears or a Snap-On or Mac Tool Dealer. Also a lot of part stores have Piston Ring Groove Cleaners. From experience, (don't know what the cost is/was) Lisle used to make one of these tools that is easy to use and did a very good job. You may want to check with a NAPA Parts Store and see if they still sell them.

Soak the piston good first, just grinding the carbon out is a drag. GooGone is surprisingly good for this, although I've used carb cleaner, kerosene, and oven cleaner with good results too.
I've also had above average luck with just soapy water, anything that'll soften the crusty stuff.
Then just use a broken ring, I never bothered to sharpen one, although I did square one off once.
Don't be in a hurry here, that'll irritate you more than anything else...
