I am looking for a new chainsaw. I currently have an older "Muchalla" (know its not spelt right but can't remember right way) I have looked at Sears? Who makes the current sears, is it a reputable brand?

I know a Husky or Stihl is likely best bet, but wonder who makes saws for sears?

Thanks

Like some people say you get what you pay for, but Sears saws were rated highly by consumer report. I think the way they rate things is how well you like the item the first 6 months, or something like that. We bought our son one ($129) for a college graduation gift and he loves it. I have used it and it is very ergonomic and quite. I personally have a Jonserud and a little jon (that was made by Poulan in 1973) and the only problem I ever forsee is the availability of parts!

From a professoinal tree trimmer, you get what you pay for! Also think about how big do you need. Our (small) saws at work are made by Echo. You can get them at Home Depot and many other places. Thats what I would recommend for a tight budget. I think Stihls are overpriced for what they are. If want a good saw to last, look for a Husky.

I went to Sears to purchase a chainsaw..asked to see a spec. sheet for a particular saw. On the bottom of the page it gave the manufacturer of the saw. example: manufactured for Sears Roebuck by Poulan XXX XXX inc.

I don't know about nowadays , but years ago , both Macullach(don't remember spelling) and Poulan saws had problems with cylinder walls pealing. The cylinder walls were coated with chrome/nickle type material. It would peal off. It was the start of these two saws cheap reputation. Macullach had to start putting names on there saws , like Eager Beaver , etc. , hoping to attract the average every day consumer. At one time , Macullach had a good saw. They ruined that 30 years or so ago.

Poulan makes all but one* of Sears' current chainsaws. Low-end models, poor quality, a bad deal all around unless you're going to cut down one tree and put it on the shelf for 360 days.

*That one is is their 51cc most expensive model. Made by Solo, a German company that equals Stihl or Husqvarna in quality. However, the model made for Sears is a better consumer model instead of pro.

McCulloch, BTW
