Hi everyone! I received the plans for the trailer I'm planning to build. It's the 6x10' utility trailer with a wire mesh loading ramp and a pressure treated deck. I bought the plans from Northern Tool. Anyway, several of the guys mentioned that it was not cost effective to build. They are probably right. However, here's the closest I can figure the cost to be.

Building with new materials: steel, axle, springs, hubs, wheels and tires, fenders, jackstand, etc. - $650.00 to $700.00. I saw the same trailer for sale for $1195.00. I don't know if that was overpriced or not. I'm going to check around.

Anyone else know what a trailer of this type would cost? By the way, the plans are very well written, nothing left to guessing.

Thanks, Matt

Rule of thumb for axle center is from the front of the deck to the axle center should be 60% of the deck length.. eg. if deck is 120inches long axle center should be placed at 72 inches..

hope this helps

Does anyone out there know the formula for where to place axles on a trailer as far as how far back they should be.It seems like someone told me once something like for every inch long it should be 2 inches back? Thanks Chris
can you please email me the answer?

I also use to build trailers for a living. I would say your estimates are about right. I would say to you, go ahead and build it if you are capable of doing so. I have found out over the years that just because a trailer is factory built doesent mean its a good one. There is 2 different types of axles out there. I believe they are called straight axle and cambered axle. The straight axle has wheels in this position empty !--! and while loaded /--\, (thats not good). The cambered axle is like this empty \--/ like this loaded !--!, (thats what you want)! Good luck to you.

Go for it!!!

As I mentioned in a prior posting, building trailers is part of what I do for a living. I still get great joy from everyone I build.

As for cost, I sold one today for $900, 5x12. Of course my cost was much less. Your figures seem about right for new material. Have fun.

I think $1200 for a 6'x10' utility trail w/o brakes is a bit expensive. Don't forget lights, wiring, hitch and paint in your estimate. Pay attention to the plans if they discuss axle alignment. Trailers need a little toe-in, too. If you don't get the alignment right you'll have a lousy-towing tire-eater on your hands.
Maybe you can buy cheaper than you can build, but if you take pride in your work and gain satisfaction by doing it yourself, then go for it!

I had a local guy build me a 6'6"X 16' inside floor. He used two used house trailer axles, 2" X 2" 1/4 angle iron for the main frame construction and 2" X 2" X 3/8 under the floor. He charged me 600.00. I use it mainly for lawn tractors but I have had to haul both sons cars home after breakdowns and have hauled my cars on it when I end up with to many at the farm and not enough drivers. Its not wide enough to haul most of my tractors.

Why would you need plans to build something that simple??

Jim,

You're right about getting it right the first time. I've never built a trailer before (though I completely restored a snowmobile trailer a few years ago). The $20 dollars for proven plans is a small price to pay (in my estimation) for a proven design. I do a lot of woodworking and I know the headscratching time figuring dimensions, angles, etc. is the most time consuming part of a project. I'd just rather put my time into other things. Not that I don't design my own stuff. It's just that this set of plans is perfect for my needs.

Someone commented on wiring, lights, paint, etc. being figured into my estimate. I did figure in all of those things. I'm going to check out some other prices on ready-built trailers today. I'll let you know what I find.

Matt

I bought a new 6 1/2' by 12' last summer with a rear mesh loading ramp for $600.00. I then installed another mesh loading ramp on the left front side. I haul 2 large 4 wheelers and can load and unload the front one without bothering the rear one. Works great and pulls good.
