If you had $500, which table saw would you get?

I am in the market for a new table saw. This will be my first and last saw, so I want a good one. I want a belt drive one, I hate all the noise that the direct drives make. I looked at the Delta "Professional", I like the fence it worked better than any of the others. I also looked at the Rigid saw, it had just about the same specs. as the Delta but cost $50 less. Looked at the Bosch, which comes with a stand, but can be used as a bench top model. What I liked about the Bosch was the table would extend out to the side so you could cut a 4x8 sheet better.

Any good or bad info would be greatly accepted. I will not be using the saw for commercial work, just want a well built saw that's going to last.

Thanks,
Bob G

I bought a Grizzly saw about 2 years ago and have no complaints. The saw gets used nearly every weekend on furniture and cabinets around home. Whatever you buy, make sure it has cast trunions and table, and a high quality rip fence. The fence makes the saw.

I agree with Robert that $500 is not enough money if you expect this to last the rest of your life. Do not buy a direct drive, they are junk. I like the Delta Unisaw the best, but it is too many $$$$ and too big for my space. I purchased the JET 10" contractor saw with cast iron extensions. Delta also makes nice contractors style saw. Whatever saw you get buy the upgrade fence, I bought the Jet upgrade and it is much better than the standard fence. It has been several years since I priced saws but I would expect a nice contractor style to run $800 - $1000.

"If" you really want to make it "your last saw", i think you may have to spend more money. I'm for the most part, a retired custom furniture, cabinet maker, and my first saw in the 70's was one of those "Sears Best". It took about a year before i got good enough to realize it wasn't all that good of a saw. I saved up and bought a Delta contractors saw. It was a HUGE improvement, but a few years of putting up with the viboration was more than i wanted, and it didn't stay locked into place like i wanted, and after a few years needed arbor berrings. Finally, i bought a Delta "Unisaw", i still have it today, and it's not needed anything but maintance!! It's still smooth, tight, and if needed it will run for hours on end staying in ajustment! The first Unisaw was made around the 1940's and if needed parts are still not a problem to get for one. I've had a big commercial saws since my Unisaw, but they are all gone, and i'll NEVER sell my Unisaw! Now, for a cheaper cabinet saw, you might want to look at a Grizzly as suggested in another post. Most every brand has "tried" to copy the "unisaw" and maybe you would be happy with one of the copies?? Robert

look at grizzly tools
Link
I also like the Ridgid line they are owned and built by Emerson Electric who used to build Craftsman back when craftsman was good.
I would recomend looking for a used craftsman table saw from the late 50's to 80's cast iron top with cast iron extensions. 1 1/2 or 2 hp motor. then change pulleys and belt to bruning pulleys and link belt.

I find that the Craftsman 22839 model was a pleasnant surprise for $450 and... they threw in the cast iron router table extension with router fence kit AND the rolling table saw holder. In assembling this unit - It seems that everything is High quality and substantial. Thank God for the Tiawanese - We could,'t afford this if it were made here!

Another idea why you want the belt drive might be the life of the motor. If the motor burns out you still have a saw, just put another motor on it. I would get the one that had the mosr toom for growth if there were any attachments you might want to get later. And the one that could hold the biggest piece of wood.

Just putting another motor on it really isn't as easy as it sounds! most of the direct drive saws have their "own spl. motor", and you have to go back to them and pay what ever they want for it, assumeing parts will be still available by then? A saw that's belt drive "is" the way to go if you want it to be "your last saw". Much quieter ect.. Robert

I bought a Sears 10" with cast table and and extension for a router on sale for $500 that I like. The fence is much better than the old Sears saws. Check the blade speed on different saws - some of them are 4800 - 5000 RPM that burn the wood; get a saw with 3400 RPM blade speed.
