New air compressor is rattling

Bought myself a new 5 horsepower upright air compressor. So far I like it, nice to have air in my shop!

The compressor is quiet until it gets up to about 85 psi then it starts to make a light rattling inside the pump. It sounds like a loose wrist pin does in a car engine. Is this normal? I have a 2 year warranty so maybe just run it and see if it blows up in 2 years? It is a Coleman Powermate.

Thanks.

Old craftsman I have rattles. DOne it for over 10 years. I just change oil periodically and keep on using it. But might not hurt a thing since yours is new to get more information on your noise. Think this old craftsman I have was made by de-vill-biss.

I bought one from Sears about 1975. Change the oil every 10 years or so. It will probably outlast me.

That is the exact compressor that I got last month. So far I love it--haven't noticed any rattling really, but have heard that on other compressors. I even just got through adding another tank to mine for some extra capacity--works good!

Yeah, I am going to add another tank this summer. We have a 100 lb propane bottle that was changed over to an air tank that I'll probably set outside and connect when I do bigger jobs.

I have a plan for when I sandblast though now: we have 3 air compressors - my 5hp upright, Dad has a 6 hp upright with 40 gallon tank, and a 5hp Honda powered wheelbarrow type. With all three hooked together I should really be able to sandblast now!

I'm going to listen to Dad's 6 hp compressor a little closer today and see if that one makes the same noise as mine - if not I'm calling customer service.

Thanks
Steven

I used a 100 lb propane cylinder also--does anyone know approx. how many gallons one of these are?? Kind of curious as to how much more capacity I have added to mine. Thanks

Hey Steve@, if I were you I would double-check the oil level...maybe change it even after a couple hours of run time. That way you can check it for metalflakes, etc. If that doesn't change anything I would Definately contact cust. service where you bought it and get it on record that you think it has a noise soon. My 2-stage IR does change tone at about 90-100lbs. though. Just my 1/2 penny worth. You bought a nice compressor though. Coleman does a pretty good job on warranty so I wouldn't worry too much. Now you can save for cool air tools.

Most of the warranties I have ever collected on were pro-rated by the length of service time used;ie the longer you put off doing something about it probably the more they will want to charge you for prorated use time. Just my experience and opinion. GeneDavis
