Here goes: welder proposition.

I have an engine drive welder with a bad engine on it. I realize that welder/generators have to spin at about 1800 RPM. I was wondering what you guys thought about building a setup with a couple chain drives such that I could run the welder off of a 540 RPM pto such that the chain raios got me 1800 RPM at the welder. What do you guys think of this idea. Does anybody know exactly how fast a welder/generator needs to spin? What size chain would I need to transmit the 24+/- HP? Anybody ever done anything like this?

Did just that with a standby generator some years
ago. Used a chevy 3.36:1 rear end from the bone yard. PTO input on the proper axel to get the proper
rotation. Lock the differential gears and cutoff
axel on opposite side. Couple the pinion to the generator. 540 X 3:36 = 1814.

Rebuild or replace the engine; much simpler, more usable, doesn't tie up tractor, makes welder usable at any distant location, less labor, sure-fire solution.

CJ,

the old lincoln sa series ran at 1400 rpm. most of the engine driven welders have no bearing to support the rotor on the engine end .also have no shaft extension on which to a pulley .

Both the engine driven welders i've owned turned 3,600 rpm. I'd use belt drive instead of chain drive if it was me. It will take a lot of gearing to get 540 up to 3600. Lets see, 540x7=3780rpm, so you will need a pully 7 times bigger on the pto shaft than on the welder. That will allow you to run the welder at the right rpm, and run the tractor at a little less than pto speed, as i'll bet your tractor has a lot more pto hp than the engine that drove the welder. This means if you had a 3" on the welder, you'll need 21" on the pto, unless you want to go through a jack shaft? Well, you get the idea of what it will take. Guys, do i have my math right? BTW, both my welders had the welder connected right on the crank shaft of the motor, and used the out board berring of the motor to support the welder armature. You will need to figure out how to support the armature with out the motor connected. Robert

i would think that the ratio should be 7:1 so the circumfrance of the bigger pulley is 7x greater than the smallest am i right?

Yes, circumferance of the drive pulley 7 times
the circumferance of the driven pulley. Not diameters. I agree on the belt idea. That is awfully fast for a chain drive. Ed

Yes, I think belts are the way to go -- specifically, Vee belts - at least two and probably three fairly heavy section belts.
To find the correct pulley size, multiply the diameter of the smaller pulley by 3.14, multiply the product by 7 and divide that product by 3.14 to get the diameter of the larger pulley for the PTO shaft. You WILL ned to look at outrigger bearings for the welder shaft. Another alternative is to mount the welder on a trailer, drive pulleys and all, with a double-universal-jointed shaft to connect to the tractor PTO. This will allow you to tow the welder behind your tractor if you should need to go mobile.
