I read the pevious posts on small engines and would like opinions on the larger,16-20 hp engines. What engines features cast iron bores, robust ball bearings etc?Any good or bad experiances?I have my opinions of the older l head designs but no knowlege of the modern ohv engines.Opinions?
Thanks

Have a Vangard 18hp on my Deere 140 garden tractor. Has been a great engine so far, and I've asked a great deal of it, both in hours, and performance.

I am thinking ahead to retire the kohler in my jd 300,much akin to your 140.Any comments on instulation mods?Did you have to cut the frame or go remote filter?Any snags with the drivesaft/flywheel coupling?how about wireing? How long has it been and any bugs with the swap?Hope i have not been to pushy, but i'm curious and don't know if I will get anouther year out of the old girl,as is.
Thanks
Al

The Honda's are a well built industrial engine. I easily have them ranked at the top of the heap. The B&S V twin Vangard ohv engines are pretty good too, and would probably be my second choise. These engines were designed and are built in Japan, and for the most part i keep hearing pretty good things about them. My friend sells both, a lot of Honda and Briggs engines, he says the Honda runs a little smoother, but the Vangards like the Honda's are "not" haveing reliability problems. I keep hearing of the ohv Kohlers haveing problems from time to time, so i'm not real impressed with them, and would "not" buy one. My GrassHopper mower dealer has a few each year that seem to blow up for no reason at all, most with low hours. There were lots of valve problems early on, but the one i looked at last fall had a rod out of it with 60 hours on the clock! My dealer says it happens too often! When they are in warr. Kohler replaces the whole engine on an exchange basis, but if "out of warr.", the customer gets a HUGE bill! Robert

I have a 16 hp Vanguard that has been perfect in some pretty rugged use, sometimes 8 hour days without stopping.
