Coolant tank heaters

My truck has no coolant heater in it. I'd like to add a tank heater. The heater operates like a thermosiphon; at first I thought I'd just plumb it in-line with the return hose from the heater core, but the tank heater instructions say it needs to be fed from the bottom end of the engine(i.e. lower radiator hose, radiator drain, engine block drain) and plumbed back into the top side to work properly. If any of you have such a heater, could you please say how you plumbed it? The engine in question is a '96 Ford 460 in an F-250; if someone knows where there is a good tap-in point to feed the heater, please say so. Any and all thoughts are welcome. The various truck sites have been no help. Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, a lower radiator hose heater is a lot easier to install, is a lot less complex, and will work about as well as a tank heater. They are usually cheaper too. Easy fix, although you do need to drain some coolant.

Hal, I got a MF-690 with Perkins 248 Cu.in. that I need a heater for. Where would you recommend I look for the kind you are taling about "in the lower radiator hose"? Thanks for your help.

I have one on a Mercedes OM 352 diesel. I used
the block drain for my lower feed side. The unit
was set lower for good flow and the upper hose
is connected just above the gooseneck/waterpump.
There was a plug there I removed and brazed on
a hose fitting. Bleed the air out and it worked
perfect. You might be able to use a tee where the
temp. sending unit is tapped in, that way your
temp. gauge will still work. I do that with a 172
Ford engine. I think it's best just to heat the engine block for quicker warm ups. Try not to
heat the radiator water as it will take much time to do the job. I also use freeze plug units
which work well but are slower.
