Was given a fairly recent Genrac XL5000 generator with a blown engine. Out of warranty on time but very few hours. New long block is about $240. Should I purchas a new engine or just go with a new generator. Can buy a new generator, different brand, for about $550. Any experience with the Genrac, Good --Bad---Ugly? thanks in advance, ray

I have a 6500 watt Genrac Generator driven by a three cylinder diesel engine. I am looking for a schematic of the voltage regulator model #67680. If anyone knows of place to buy parts for a Genrac generator that does'nt cost an arm and a leg, would you please give me their phone number?

I have repaired a couple of these units in the past. Before you spend any money take the rotor and stator to a motor shop or even a generator repair shop to test and check them out to see if they are ok(phone Generac for the proper resitstance values and testing proceedures). If you are going to use this unit on a regular basis $240 is not a bad price(considering most other parts from Generac are overpriced) but make sure you get a warranty with the long block, replace the bearing on the rotor and set the speed(3600 rpm exactly with a load or 60 hz with a frequency meter plugged into an outlet with a load). On the other hand if you are only going to use the unit if the power goes out keep your money-unless you live in a problem area. Honda units are still the best all around units, you pay more for them but the are very reliable (as long as you don't allow the generator to get wet during a storm-this is when the generater cooling fan draws moisture over the windings which can damage any brand of generator-keep in a reasonably dry location when in use).

the generator it'self has only one bearing and maybe some brushes, if it has good quality copper windings there is'nt much to go wrong with them. The engine is another matter, to provide a cheap home use unit an inferior engine is used compared to a commerial machine the is expected to run 40 hours a week. I bet all this y2k baloney led to a lot of cheap engines being mounted on gen sets. The crankshaft of a generator engine is special, it's tapered, you'll need to get an engine with that type of shaft to fix your thing. Look to Kolher, Robin, Honda, for quality, quiet engines.

I've only had mine about a year so I cannot tell you about the longevity of the unit. However, I have a very loud 10 hp that only runs flat out. Last winter, Home Depot had at least a half dozen Generac models and most of them had quieter engines with better mufflers that also ran at an idle speed when not under load. If you are going to buy a new engine, go for the quiet model.

Possibly the engine overspeeded, check the governer to see if it had stuck or failed or did Generac have another speed control device on this model (previous post).

My now 20 year old Generac has a plain ole 11hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Can't you just replace the whole engine cheaper & easier than rebuilding? Or has the engine changed to something proprietary?

I did have a failure of the generator control module during the first year or so of ownership. Sealed/potted unit, not rebuildable. Generac's distributor in San Francisco wanted over $250 for a replacement. After I complained, Generac sold me one direct from the factory for about $90. Unit has run fine since & I am happy with it.

I believe the reason rental yards use Generac is that they are cheap to buy and/or replace, not because they are high quality. Just an opinion.

Regards, JerryB

I've had no personal expiriance with these generators but if it has few hours and a blown engine the forecast isn't too sunny. Was the engine abused(no oil change, dirty air filter)?? or did it just go. And if it was abused who knows what shape the rest of it is in. On the other hand it may be more cost-effective to drop a new engine in it. I just like the challange of keeping things going. If you don't want to spring for a new generator then I think you should put a new engine in. That's just my opinion though. It should be noted that I have completly rebuilt a 13 year old 3 hp briggs engine that seized up rather than spend a 99 dollars for a new mower.
With that in mind, do what you want with my opinion.
Good Luck!
Bob

I have a Genrac 5000 that won't start. Low oil level doesn't seem to be the issue. It won't even fire. Any ideas? Is old gas an issue? I mean, wouldn't it even try to turn over with old gas?

Bob, thanks for the reply. The engine was not abused. Estimated run time was less than 25 hours. The cylinder wall hone marks were still there. The unit had oil in it and the low oil shut down did not shut down the engine. Looks to me like the rod siezed on the crank and broke. The unit was running in direct sun and temperature was in the 90s. Was probably working about 2/3 load and had been running couple hours. Just scares me to wonder if it is a design problem or "just the luck of the draw". That is the reason for my question. thanks, ray

If this is the case I'll have to agree with DC Dale saying it was probably just bad luck and not a bad brand. Sometimes these things happen. I'd say go for the new engine.

Ray: No personal exp., but Generac is a fairly popular brand in the rental industry, which is a good indicator. Good Luck.....
