What is different about induction electric motors. I have been looking at some shop equip uses them. It seems they are less hp that others for the same size equip. Do they make more power? thanks

I presume you are comparing induction motors to universal type motors. Induction motors are heavier, quieter, more expensive, and longer lasting than universal motors. I have a link below to "How stuff works" web site. Search for induction of electric motors and you can find some articles about them. I hope you can get most of your questions answered there.
