I know this is off the forum subject, but I don't know where to go for help on this and we read you guys all the time. So feel like I can ask. Thanks.
Subject: Ceiling exhaust fan/heater/light. The one I just took out of our bathroom was made by sears. Of course only the heating element was out and I tried to get one, but of course, they stopped making that part available in 2000. So I wanted to install a new one, but Mr. Wontfixitforme is telling me to find an element. I don't know where or even if that's the way to go. Also, the old housing is round and the ones I've looked at all have square housings so I have another problem of making the hole the right shape... why isn't anything ever as simple as it first appears??! I've searched the net for a source of the same kind of fan (heat/light/fan)to no avail. Can anyone give me some suggestions...? Thanks in advance.

MrsFixit, Be careful of the advice you got from DonLC. There are more than a white and a Black wire in the fan unit you have . There should be a common White wire for all the electrics in there . But 3 Different HOT wires for it . One Hot wire for the Light . (Usually the Black ) one hot wire for the Heater ( usually the RED ) and one Hot wire for the Fan ( usually the BLue ) . I imagine you have three switches to turn on either the Fan the Light or the Heater . You will save a lot of aggravation to Buy a new Unit and to have it installed by a qualified Electrician . You may be interested to know if something did happen ( Fire ) your home insurance may not cover it if they know you were doing some home wiring . I dont spose you do Home Dentistry ? LOL ..... Save some trouble and have it looked at professionally .

Mrs. Fixit, Go to www.grainger.com There should be a store somewhere near you. This is the store where the large contractors go to get what they may need or require on their jobs..I have a catalog here if I knew where you are ,I would be glad to look it up to see where your closest store would be! Good Luck

Manufacturers drop and add products for various reasons: safety, cost reduction, and , primarily, planned product obsolesence. The old products probably were better than the new replacement, but they don't mix very well. If you can find the right part, it may work O.K. but be very careful. Mfgs used to change flourescent light fixtures every 10 years to increase sales; now they change designs every 5-6 years. Just try finding a new part for an old fixture! Good Luck.

Take your fixture to supply houses that you think sells these parts.....as long as there is room in your fixture for the new heater and a place to mount it.....it will work hook it up with the same two wires as the old one.....black is hot, white is common and green if you have one is the ground.....You will have to find the right person....most of them go by the book..... they realy don't under stand how they work so that is the way to get rid of you.....It could be the coil wire is broke, take two needle nose pliers and hook the two across each other.....turn it on be sure it don't get too hot(you have slightly shortened the heat coil, so it will get a little hotter)....best bet is to find a new coil that will fit in the same space.....

Hi Don LC,

"It could be the coil wire is broke, take two needle nose pliers and hook the two across each other.....turn it on be sure it don't get too hot(you have slightly shortened the heat coil, so it will get a little hotter)...."

You really think thats this is the best advice to give someone that doesn't know about electricty?

Wiring by internet will KILL someone!!!

Your post could read as you take both wires and wrap them around the needle nose and turn the juice on. Now can you see why my comments?

We have to be careful about giving advice that can hurt someone. Very young children read this website alot and will try what your type without being experienced!

Don't different heating elements have different electrical resistances? Can't imagine that every heating element has the same exact electrical characteristics. Wouldn't one run the risk of frying some wiring(or WORSE) if the new element is pulling too much juice??

Copy this to your Ad bar. Maybe it is like what you have. At least you can start there. Sears merch. is of course made by other mfr's. Above is made by Nu-Tone. Sure be cheaper if you could just find the htr element and DIY. Good Luck

Hi MrsFixit,

You may not be able to find a new heating element. Alot of mfg make them almost impossible to replace as by the time the element burns out the fixture has seen it's useful life as other componets are damaged on the heating side although the fan will still work.

Unless your very experienced on replacing the heating elements I suggest you buy a new unit if you must have heat as you be taking a big risk of a fire starting or other componet failure afer you replace the heating element.

I replaced some commerical units on a Motel bathroom and with-in 6months I had to return and replace the complete fixtures at my cost. Lesson learned, buy new units rather than repair!

Is the element made to be replaced? If it's riveted probably not. I know there is a place that sells obsolete Sears parts, but I can't find the info right now.
Maybe someone else has it.
