I was looking at buying a sand blaster that requires 10-15 CFM at 80 psi. Would an air compressor with 11.3 CFM at 90 psi be enough. What do you guys think about Ingersol-Rand air compressors. Thanks

I'd be cautious about it. I recently used the Northern Tool 10 gallon blaster which has 1/8 nozzle and the workshop compressor (don't know size but it is large) ran continously and still could only keep 50 psi at the start. (eventually it burnt out the motor) Snag is that as the tip is used it wears quite quickly and the hole gets bigger. The amount of air needed increases in proportion to the area of the hole (remember pi x radius squared?) What it means is that if it needs 15cfm with an 1/8 nozzle it will need a great deal more than that with only a little wear in the nozzle.

It will work but will probably be breathless very quickly unless you are using nozzles that are less that 1/8 inch. I ended up using an engine driven hydrovane road compressor that puts out about 75cfm @ 100psi and that worked well but I'd be struggling to justify buying one. I have a posting somewhere in the archives (titled sandblasting, I think) about 6 - 8 weeks ago with some other things I discovered about sandblasting in a couple of weekends work with borrowed kit. Main thing was it needs a LOT of air.

Despite the fact that its messy, noisy and needs expensive kit it is a fabulous way to clean rusty metal, I think.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

JoeK is 100% on the money! TIP is the place for you! Their catalog will give you a ton of good information. Their link is below. Also feel free to call them. They are very helpful.

I have an IR & it's fine, but be aware they make the entire range from home shop to extra heavy industrial. Look into TIP combination pkg deals. When it comes to sand blasting there is no such thing as too much compressor

Thats a pretty wide range, possibly referring to various tips used.I have a single stage 6hp/80gal 10.8 cfm, which handles my siphon, pressure, cabinet blasters OK,as long as I use the small tips.Make sure your"gun" is adaptable for diff tips and that they are available as they require regular replacement. All my units are from TiP,who also offers setup information, parts, repair and have great customer service history w/me although it's been awhile since I needed anything.
