Have many norway spruce trunks 1 to 2.5 ft in dia and maybe 20ft long that were stacked neatly off the ground 2 yrs ago. Obviously have aged sitting out side etc. Are they still worthy of milling for lumber/planks etc?? thanks

Not familiar with Norway spruce; so don't don't resistance to rot. Around "here", most of our native species will rot 2" to 6" deep around circumference within 2 years. I would cut one end of a log off about 6" and see how much it had turned what the oldtimers called 'dotey'(sp); i.e. rotted.

as long as the worms aren't in yet they should be just fine. Don't have to worry so much about shrink on what you make from it cause they are pretty much dry.

They will cut fine but It depends on what you want to use the wood for. Having dried for tow years you will likely find that the logs have split some form shrikage. When milled this may make problems depending on where the splits are in the finished lumber. Rough construction is probably no problem if in doube about strenght you could have them cut over size. Just my thoughts for what its worth.

Also from Michigan - those logs have been well preserved by the cold water of the lake. Also they were virgin timber - very dense and high quality lumber to begin with! They are sought after for furniture and trim uses. $$$$$ More to answer the question, a couple of years drying won't hurt a bit, probably will reduce tendency to warp when they are used. We used wood from a pile of rough cut native lumber stored in our barn for almost 50 years, to build a sheep shed this winter. Worked our fine - just had to work around the warps and splits!

I don't see why not, around here they pull 100 year old logs from the river and dry them, then mill them up and get top dollar for the wide boards. Your dry logs might even be easier to cut for the mill than green timber.

When it comes to "easier to cut", the faster they get milled the better they saw!! BUT, 2 year old logs will still have a lot of good lumber in them!! I've sawn numerous "old" logs. Robert
